Is it possible to make dry food at home from the good wet food that is low carb? I'm really struggling with food that is ok for vegetable to eat because she only wants to eat the food the rest of the kitties eat.

A lot of people have tried it, but the results have been pretty dismal...I haven't heard of one "success story"

And it really stinks up your house

Most of us with multi-cat households just switch all our cats onto low carb canned so we don't have to worry about our sugarcat getting into the other guys food

Chris, I've been looking at ideas to get my "crunch junkie" Picasso off his dry food. One member in particular told me exactly what you just said - she formed and baked some wet cat food and it smelled awful :arghh::arghh: She has also tried extruding it through a pastry bag and putting it in a dehydrator - didn't stink quite as badly but another fail. :(

Hey Vegetable's Mom (Dad?) - will your other cats just eat wet? I know you mentioned in another thread about the challenges of going away - there are food dispensers some folks use around here and they put wet food (diluted with water to make a bit of a slurry) in them with good success. They can dispense up to 5 meals a day - this one on Amazon.com gets good reviews. And remember, if you purchase any supplies, check out the shopping affiliates page that helps raise funds for Sugar Cats everywhere!

My cat Marshmallow is a total crunch junkie!! I love that description. I was hoping to read that cooking wet food was a fabulous option. :( I guess I'll keep trying (and throwing away) wet food....

Baking the wet food isn't going to be cost effective either. There are a couple very low carb dry foods you can buy that ounce per ounce are probably less expensive than making your own. Also there is a transitional "wet" kibble called Fresh Pet that is refrigerated. This is helpful for cats who just can't make the leap from dry to wet foods.

Thanks Meya. I've seen it in my local store and wondered about it.

I see it is made in the U.S. - I will have to contact the manufacturer to see if they will be complying with the new Canadian pet food import laws coming soon. EVO has already decided to pull out of Canada leaving a lot of folks whose kitties won't transition to wet with fewer and fewer low carb options :(

EVO claims they pulled out of Canada because of financial reasons which implies they didn't get the sales they expected or wanted here in Canada. EVO had been available here for years so for them to suddenly decide to exit right when the new Canadian pet food import regulations are due to be implemented, seems very coincidental. The new regulations will require more inspections of the pet food manufacturing plants including the facilities of all their ingredient suppliers to procure the necessary documentation. Needless to say for smaller specialized pet food companies that is going to be very cost prohibitive. That expense would then be passed onto the consumers and they would end up pricing themselves out of our market.

While it is possible that after a few recalls their sales here have dropped off, I am highly suspicious that the new regulations were at least in part responsible for their decision. I have been unable to get any response from EVO, Natura or MARS as to whether the new regulations were an influencing factor.

Áine this site claims EVO said they were expanding into new markets having been bought out by Mars - EVOs last shipment to Canada was apparently in March - but it's possible that the company was influenced by impending changes to legislation in Canada - something Linda - Mrworfmens mom - alerted me to earlier this summer.

The legislation is actually pretty vague and our government still can't quite get the language right which I'm sure frustrates manufacters to no end, but essentially they want any imported food to comply with a set of standards that before now only applied to beef products. Every manufacturer who exports to Canada will have to have and pass a site inspection, an expense I'm sure many don't want to incur. Most U.S. Suppliers, including Young Again, are making no commitments on how long their foods will be available here.

Hope that explains it!

Ack Linda - you beat me to it!

Hi Linda (ETA) AND Melanie! :D

Thanks for that information. I worry about stuff like this because of the trade agreements that are being negotiated over here at the moment (behind closed doors). I worry about not being able to get US stuff that I need for Saoirse.

@Critter Mom - Interestingly getting information regarding the new pet food import regulations here is like pulling teeth out of a running rhinoceros. Makes you wonder why! :nailbiting:What seems to be happening is that small business is being blocked in favour of the major conglomerates like Purina and Hills. :banghead:

EVO is likely not the only casualty. I'm fairly sure we may no longer be able to get Stella and Chewy's here either. Stella and Chewy's told me a couple of months ago that the lack of product here was due to their small facilities and an inability to keep up with demand. They assured me they were moving into a new larger plant and that the supply would improve within a few weeks. When I checked with the store that carries their product last week, they were still not getting their orders and had no idea why. o_O I need to follow up with Jenn at Young Again to see if their legal department has made a final determination on their ability to ship to Canada come September. I fear we are only seeing the tip of the iceberg at this point in time.

@Brashworks - Thanks for the link to the petition. I was unaware of it but it looks like its been there for awhile. I tried to send a note to the person who started it but for some reason, my message won't go through. I'll keep trying. I'm thinking that a petition directed at the CFIA would have more impact!

Quite. That's what worries me about the TTIP stuff. I'd hazard a guess that the majority of the population over here haven't a clue about the potential negative impact it will have on all manner of aspects of their everyday lives. Whatever about human stuff, I do worry about it affecting Saoirse's supplies.

@Critter Mom thanks for checking in. Today is frustrating. My dad sent me a visl of lantus but for some reason the tracking said it was delivered today but it's nowhere to be seen!

Vegetable is being picky today & refuses to eat her wet food. She's insisting on her crunches. I keep trying to feed her wet food but unless all the cats get the same food she won't eat it. So I give some wet food to the rest of them but vegetable still cries for her crunches. I end up having to mix the dry & wet together so she will eat it.

I'm going to try freezing the food & see if she likes that. She's very spoiled & she's got major attitude when she wants to.

On a good note o bought her a new harness today so she can go play in the yard while I'm doing some yard work this weekend. That will make her happy :)
