Purina Owns Fancy Feast Are You Aware?

I've read a lot about Purina and their issues with "mysterious deaths" in their formulations of foods with class action lawsuits going against the company for it all.

I am in the midst of an issue with Morrigan right now with mucousy-bloody diarrehia (and, I can't even spell it properly) while on Purina Pro Plan canned food so, I'm doing a lot of reading up on the foods by Purina where I'm reading about a lot of cats and dogs with bloody diarrheia while on this food that clears up when they take them off of it and get them onto something else that she will eat. I'm NOT sure that it was the Purina Pro Plan as it may have been the introduction of Pure Snacks (freeze dried chicken treats).

I'm trying to find another canned food to get Morrigan onto (I'm Canadian so, not everything that pet parents in the U.S. is available to us) and get her back off the m/d kibble in the midst of this problem, without stirring up more issues. In doing so, I'm doing some research.

Given that a lot of members in here are feeding their sugar kitties Fancy Feast (and have read a lot of feedback in other sites about not using anything "Purina")...I'm wondering if you all know that Fancy Feast is now owned by Purina? If you weren't aware, PURINA owns Fancy Feast.

Now, I've been told by Purina that Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers, Elegant Medleys and Grilled Tenders, are all 5% carb and below where I had previously been told otherwise. I had them triple check that and they claim they all are.

Anyone have any input/opinion?

Balderdash!! Dr. Lisa Pierson spent years checking into carb percentages for cat foods and these are all higher than 5% and I know for a fact that they must be because just a little "gravy" off a Gravy Lovers will bring China's BG up significantly within 20 minutes. I keep some of the Elegant Medleys around too to use when I need a "medium carb" food

With the number of us here that use the Gravy Lovers foods when our cats go under 50 and the fact that they almost always spike our kitties BG numbers, I'd say the people you talked to at Purina don't know what they're talking about. (not a big surprise there!)

LOL...I had the same reaction and actually, called back to get a different rep. Got the same answers as the previous rep. I KNOW they are not that low in carbs. 4% for the Gravy Lovers? Nah.

BUT...having said that...it was Purina that I called and they do own and manufacture Fancy Feast. Now, you'd think that they'd know their own products, wouldn't you? Obviously, they don't. Or...they are out to try to fool the consumer. Either way, it's making me question Purina as a manufacturer in general. I even had them check and triple check with both times that I called and both reps. Grrrrr.....

That makes MUCH more sense, BJ! That explanation, I can make sense of. It doesn't make sense that it's as low as they tried to say, in spite of me questioning that 3 or 4 times.

Yes the Purina trademark I right there on the label. I've had no problems with their FF line of food. I used to feed FF off and on before the diabetes and now exclusively. Both my cats diabetic and non thrive on FF even though it's probably not the healthiest.

You know, Dusty Bones...I wasn't aware of that. I'd always known Fancy Feast to have been produced by another company and apparently, it was...up until more recently when Purina bought it out.
I will tell you though that we had our cats on Fancy Feast later in years when it came out and prior to that, it was Friskies, Whiskas, 9-Lives etc.. None of our cats got kibble back then or while growing up. They only saw vets for their shots and lived quite healthy lives. One cat lived to be nearly 23 on the above.

I think I was just shocked, given all of the bad press that Purina has been getting over their foods to find out that Purina produces Fancy Feast as well as a host of other cat and dog foods that we have come to rely upon.

I say this now while having a diabetic cat with colitis while on Purina Pro Plan canned foods and having read so much about how other people's cats had bloody diarrheia while on it. (Pro Plan Kitten Classics). Now, I'm wondering whether to try her on anything Purina again??? This was the ONLY canned food that I could get her onto though. She balked at every other brand. I have a small pet food store in my house and have thankfully, been able to return for exchange a lot of it. Even Merrick was a "no go" for her. But, while she's on solely m/d kibble right now (vet said to keep her there for the next few days until this clears up and put up with the higher numbers for the next few days) I HAVE to get her back to canned foods again! I'm wondering whether to chance the Purina Pro Plan again as I'm not sure what caused it. *SIGH*

Yes, thanks Cat Ma. We have had her to the E.R. clinic on Sunday and she's now on Flagyl for it and I've been in touch with the Fill-In Vets for our vet who is away on vacation. She's being closely watched and I do have the Forti-Flora too.

They should be obliged to say how they are calculating the carb count. I called Wellness to inquiry about three canned no grain flavors. They differentiated it like this: as fed or dry. There was a big difference in the two and I didn't know how to reconcile that with the figures on Dr. Lisa's spreadsheet. I assumed that I would subtracted one from the other and that figure was very close to Dr. Lisa's figures. It's very confusing.
