My fear has become reality. Max has stage 2 CKD. I'll post all his labs when I get them but his BUN was 44 and creatinine jumped up from 2.2 to 2.7 in 6 months. His thyroid is a little high, 2.7, but he runs a little high off and on and my vet didn't feel any nodules. His phosphorus is 4.3. His ALT is often a little high and was this time but it's been higher. His appy is off today so maybe that is why. The only good news was I think his fructosamine was 320 and he didn't have glucose in his urine. He still has +1 protein and his USG was lower than usual, 1.029 when its been 1.046-1.053.

So now I need to get him off fancy feast classics and on lower phosphorus foods. :(

Hi Elise. I'm very sorry to hear about the stage 2 CKD. I hope Max likes some of the low phos food. I know it's a royal pain when you have to go back to the drawing board trying to find food that works. I don't know how he feels about Weruva, but I know some of theirs are around or under 200. I think Hound & Gatos has a couple options too. Sending vines.

I'm sorry about the CKD, but you are very attentive to Max - it's another twist, but I have no doubt you'll manage him well! If worse comes to worst and Max won't give up the Fancy Feast, you can try a phosphorous binder. Trix's values are horrible (check out her labs tab), but she just won't give up Fancy Feast and Purina One, so I use a binder. It helps with keeping her values down a bit, but more importantly she eats enthusiastically (most of the time). I think fluids and being consistent with her cerenia, pepcid, and benazepril also play a big role with her doing so well despite her numbers.

And don't forget that Max is far more than the numbers...easier said than done, of course, but it is true!:bighug::bighug::bighug:

Elise, I know how you feel. :bighug::bighug:
When I first heard that Sheba had a higher BUN and her USG was a bit low, I was really worried. I changed her diet to low phosphorus....still mainly raw....with added egg white....and some low phosphorus Weruva.
Is Max on benazapril for the protein in his urine?
for extra fluids I make chicken broth from bones and freeze in ice cube trays. She loves them.
how is his BP?
Sending appy vines

I'm really upset. Just when I get FD down now this. The two are so incompatible. I think he did so well before FD was because he was eating lower protein food that he liked but it was high carb. I had switched him to Science Diet Cukinary Creations and the their newer grain free. He doesn't like Weurva Paw Lickin Chicken or Evo or Wellness. He will eat Friskies Special Diet a Turkey but it has fish in it and on top of that it is being discontinued. At first glance Kangaroo is good with the .86 but 1.24 is t great. It's better than the sky high ff classics. I just bought a big bag if another FD raw that I will need to return to chewy. At least I haven't opened it. Back to the drawing board and tge food lists. Not tonight though I'm too upset.

Sorry to hear about the new diagnosis Elise, but you're such a good mama to Max and I know you'll get through this together.

Many vines and hugs :bighug:

Max is on amlodipine for high BP and has been for over two years. His BP was good yesterday and that was after the blood draw and nail clipping. He's had the +1 protein for maybe 1 1/2 years and we are t going to add benazapril. Too many negatives to it. He gets lots of water added to his food and so far is well hydrated so for now that is not a concern.

Sorry about the diagnosis. Welcome to the club.:bighug::bighug: Max couldn't be in better hands.

Are you getting a UPC ratio done? Neko was at +1 protein for a couple of years and we didn't even run the UPC ratio until she got up to +3 and even then her UPC is in the gray zone for adding benazapril.

The food hunt is a pain. I'm still trying to figure out the best HC options.

We aren't going to do the ratio. My vet feels he's stable at this time. We did it after he hasn't+1 the second time and he was not at the gray zone yet. He wants to see him again in 2-3 months.

I'm sorry to hear about this dx but you keep on top of things and the best treatments. Max couldn't be in better hands.

Sending prayers.

Oh my Elise.. Im so sorry about Max and the CKD. I know you will do the best for him and hopefully find the best food for him. I have been giving Chi Chi Azodyl for the last 3 months, and it brought down her kidney values into the normal range. She wasnt that high, but it did work..at least I and the vet feel it did. Sending tons of vines for you both!:bighug::bighug::bighug:

It is very upsetting for sure, but as Marje said, Max is in excellent hands. The food thing is a tough challenge, because the needs of FD and CKD couldn't be more opposite. But aside from considering a binder, another thing to remember, too, is that since Max is on insulin, you could adjust his dose if need be in order to balance the phos with the carbs (ie, it may be better to feed a slightly higher carb food and increase his insulin if that food is low phos and he likes it). Just a thought. I couldn't really do that with Trix because I'm trying to keep her OTJ. Like Max, she doesn't like EVO or Wellness, and the Weruva flavors are too low in calories for her, so we're stuck with FF and Purina One...two of the worst foods possible as far as phos goes, but what can ya do? She does like this new binder, ConSeal AIH; since I started using that instead of the powdered binder, her appy has improved quite a bit.

((((((Elise))))) It's scary to get this diagnosis, I know it felt like the world was ending for us. The IM that examined Tiger said to treat the diabetes first. It trumps everything. But even more important, he needs to eat,so whatever he wants to eat. How is his weight?
