I was reading a Sticky on PZI and saw that you can go to Costco for it. Does my vet need to phone in the RX or can I take the empty bottle to refill? Also, for how long to do consider a cat newly diagnosed for dosing suggestions?

If your cat never went into remission, diagnosis would start from 5/27/15. If Bubba was OTJ and in remission, then I presume 6/16/15 would be the newest date to start from.

No, he has not been in remission since diagnosis. I guess what I am asking is how long does he have to have diabetes until he is not considered "newly diagnosed" and not shooting if under 180 at pre shot?

It's not how long he has been diabetic; it's whether you have enough data to know that shooting at lower numbers is safe. So for Bubba, you see what happens for a certain dose and if he stays in safe numbers for that cycle. Then the next time you see that pre shot number, you figure he may have the same reaction.

The goal is to have two shootable preshots 12 hours apart. So if your preshot is too low one cycle, look back to the dose you gave for the last shot. The next time you get a number in that range, shoot a little less in hopes he won't drop quite so low.

For example on 7/11 you had a low amps. So, maybe for a 300 (the pmps the night before) One unit would give you a shootable pre shot 12 hours later. You'll be able to see if that works, as you shot one unit for about the same number tonight.

With Prozinc, the goal isn't to lower the preshot number you shoot, but to lower the dose so you don't get a pre shot too low to shoot.

Does that make any sense?

Original diagnosis is what decides if a cat is a newly diagnosed cat or not. You don't reset it if they went OTJ. Newly diagnosed is considered under 6 months since original diagnosis.

Your no-shot/reduced-shot number doesn't have to do with how new the diagnosis is, it has to do with how experienced the caregiver is combined with, as Sue said, how much data has been gathered so that the caregiver can have a feeling for how the cat will react. As you go along, the more data you have, the less missed shots you will have.

Okay, it makes sense while I'm reading it LOL.

The cheapest place I found ProZinc was online at ValleyVet.com ($95 for a 10 ml bottle). I don't know how much it costs at Costco. If you go with Valley Vet, your vet will need to call in or fax in a prescription.

Thanks, I will check into ValleyVet.com. And lucky Marshmallow, OTJ! Congrats and continued success.
