7/13 SHEBA AMPS 301 started tramadol last night.

this is the 6 th cycle since a green number. I know the numbers are going to be higher until I can sort out her pain meds so am not going to worry about it. I will increase if no green today.
In herself see appears fine.
I started the tramadol yesterday at 4 pm. I gave 5 mgms instead of the prescribed 10 mgms in case of any issues. No problem getting her to swollow it....put it in the back of her tongue, then gave her a treat, which she gobbled up.
After about an hour or hour and half she seemed different somehow. She was up and about demanding food. Usually doesn't start asking til just before her meal. Very mobile, up and down the stairs following, or looking for me. She also seemed to be on "high alert" at times. Her pupils were very dilated but reacted to light when I tested.
Maybe she just felt better. I gave it on an empty tummy so will give it on a full one this morning and see what happens. This morning she is her usual self.

Good luck with the tramadol. I hope it helps her. Maybe the dose needs to be tweaked. It's hard to find the balance between what helps with the pain and what's too much. When MC had her dental they gave me buprenorphine. The dose they told me to give her was too much and she sat around staring with big eyes.

Bron, if you aren't comfortable with her behavior after the meds kicked in, I would try giving her less. Then you can decide if the benefits of the first dose are greater, and worth the other changes. I know that when Cinco had his surgery, they prescribed a larger dose than I'm giving him for presumed arthritis, which makes sense to me.

I'm glad she's moving around more easily and more comfortably. Speaking from my own experience, chronic, long-term pain does drag you down, and if you suddenly get relief, you do feel brighter, more alert and even eager.

Thanks Carla and Tricia. I have just given her the morning dose of tramadol. A tiny bit broke off the tablet as I was cutting it with the pill cutter so she has had a little bit less than last night. I will watch to see how she goes. Trying not to be too paranoid about it

My dog had two quite contrary reactions to Tramadol: agitation and sleepiness. I know. Weird.

Dose tweaking is a good idea if you're uncomfortable with any issues. But pain control is so important that I'm sending mega vines for success.

Thanks Marilyn. That is interesting about the reactions by your dog. As you say weird.
I agree, I hate the idea Sheba might be in pain. They are so good at hiding it.
So far no adverse reaction to the tramadol. Pupil normal size, acting normally.

It is 5 hours since Sheba had the tramadol and there has been no real reaction today. Maybe last night was because she had it on an empty stomach, or I imagined it.....don't think so though. Pupils normal today. The vet did say it might take 2 weeks for it to make a difference.

Hope you manage to figure out the right dose of the tramadol for Sheba, its a fine balancing act but she sounds in good form.

Sure hope you find just the right mix for Sheba that helps with her pain but doesn't space her out!

I'd love to be able to share China's success with everyone here! She'll probably never go OTJ, but I really am blessed that she's doing as well as she is (anti jinx to the max!!)
