7/5 Gus vet not cooperative

My vet is out until 7/7 and he is the only one in that practice that dose ultrasound so he is scheduled at 8:15. I am hoping that it is safe to wait that long. Gus is feeling better and I have meds ready. His AMPS 231 and @ +3 197. we going to the vet for fluids now. Praying and hoping that is a good decision.
 
Ok. I have to say that Gus improved little today, BG better and is little more active. I only have one more dose of bupre and called the vet to get more to keep him comfortable until his appointment on 7/7 but vet (not his primary) declined without examination and ensuring that Gus is actually in pain. I am trying to avoid unnecessary expenses so I can afford provide care for him. I am going to take may chances and wait until 7/7 unless thinks turn for the worse. I was wondering if others have to go to the vet every time for examination when cat with pancreatitis experience pain.
 
You don't know that this is pancreatitis, though. He may be prone to pancreatitis but that doesn't mean any sign of discomfort is pancreatitis. Hopefully, what you're doing will shorten the course if it is pancreatitis and if it's cystitis, you're doing the right things.

You might ask your regular vet to put a note in the chart to dispense meds like bupe based on your experience with Gus especially if your vet is going to be out of the office. Discussing what a responsible strategy is for you and for their practice may be a reasonable discussion.

Thank you. This is great idea. I just hope that we can make it safely until his next appointment. So far so good he is drinking so much water and eating much less but I am happy to see his BG going down @+3 192. Just give him fluids hopefully it will help.

I like Sienne's idea of having that conversation with the vet. For chronic conditions, some people get vials of bupe to dispense as needed, after discussion with the vet when it is appropriate to do so. I have a vial of bupe for Neko (for her arthritis), but my civie's vet is OK with me using it for my civie as needed.

Paws crossed for more improvement in Gus today. Those blues look promising. Since he's no longer used to pink/red, that might have contributed to him feeling yucky.
 
Healing vines. Keep him eating, hydrated, and free of nausea and he should do better if pancreatitis. My vet doesn't make me bring Max in every time he needs meds but the younger weekend ones would so like Sienne suggested I had the chart reflect that it was okay to pick up meds if needed.
 
I was looking at his labs and notice his ALT was slightly elevated in March. Do you have any more recent labs? I'm asking because we deal with elevated ALT in Gracie and it often makes her drink more water. Polydypsia can be a symptom of elevated livers values. I'm not saying that is Gus's issue but if he hasn't had labs since March, I'd do them if it were me.

Have you tried th liver shake. It sounds disgusting but I've given it to several of our cats when they were sick and they liked it.

I am thinking that he was used to nice blue/green numbers and sudden jump to 460 made him feel sick.

The biggest question is why he had that sudden jump. The higher numbers can certainly make a kitty feel unwell, but you still need to find out what caused them. Good luck with the vet visit on Tuesday and I hope Gus continues to eat and feel a bit better.
 
Max gets an elevated ALT with pancreatitis. It comes back to normal after long periods without pancreatitis symptoms.

I am going to ask for complete blood work. We tried liver shake in the past and it worked at that time and later he didn't care for it. Since he is on Mahi-Mahi quest I add it daily to his regular food and it dose the trick. Today he seems to start eating little nibbles often.
 
Sorry but I have yet to figure out if it increases his BG for sure. He just is too unpredictable to say with any certainty but I think it is more than likely that it is one reason for higher BG for Max. I know for sure it doesn't lead to a decrease in BG like it has for Amy's Trixie though.

I think it is wise because then you have a better idea if it's potentially an infection somewhere, kidneys, liver, etc. I'd have them recheck urine, too, if it were me but that's up to you. I don't remember if he'd on antibiotics right now but if he is, then I wouldn't do the urine recheck now.

I've seen cats on here with pancreatitis with high BGs, lower BGs, and no discernible change. ECID.

He didn't have antibiotics for long time, urine analysis is on top of my list since CKD is still suspect.
 
If he is in pain, that by itself could raise his BG. But, as Marje said, ECID. Lots of help, isn't it?! :rolleyes:

Marje, that does sound disgusting, but I'm desperate enough that I printed the recipe and I'm headed to the grocery store now to get the ingredients.

Elizabeth, I hope you can get your regular vet to make notes in Gus' chart to prevent future issues when he is gone, and that Gus eat more for you. Sending appy vines.
