Sheba is very quiet this morning. Not very hungry at all and I have given her her insulin. She is slowly eating if I hold the bowl and encourage her. We are still trying to get through first b'fast.
I have made a vet appt for this morning. Something is going on. Her appetite is always good unless she is sick. Her poop overnight was loose at the end....this happens sometimes with her so not all that unusual.
She came up into the bedroom very early this morning and flopped on the floor. She usually stays by the fire at night now. I thought she was just there for company but I think she came up to tell me she was feeling sick.

We are back from the vets.
It is looking like she has pancreatitis. She is guarding her tummy when touched. Her temp was normal.
I tested her urine before I went to the vets and it was ok.
She is behaving like she does when she has pancreatitis. He has put her on antibiotics....clavubactin one twice a day for 7 days, and she had a cerenia injection for nausea.
Her hydration was borderline so he wants me to try and get her to drink more and if she is no better tomorrow I will take her in for some subQ fluids.
I have given her temgesic....I think you call it bupe...... for pain. We don't have the range of meds out here you do so I had to give it to her up under her gum to be absorbed there. Hopefully she hasn't swollowed it.
Ooops........Sent this off accidently.
We didn't do any blood tests today.....if she doesn't respond we will.
She is not interested in food yet.

Sending feel better vines for poor Sheba- ugh, we hate pancreatitis! when you said she vomited bile, that was my first thought because that was Tiger's worst symptom as well, that and inappetance, yes tummy pain and diarrhea. Did your vet give you anti-nausea meds? The ER vet gave Tiger a shot of Cerenia, but neglected to give me pills, I had to get them from my vet and now I keep a stockpile of that and bupe. Some kitties do better with ondansetron, but either way, you have to watch for nausea because kitty will hide it very well. Tiger ate Purina EN in the hospital and so I continued feeding her that mixed with her Wellness for a week or so. Baby food might help too. Healing prayers for Sheba! :bighug:

Thank you ((Carla)), Julie, Wendy, Voula, Sienne, Ruth, Lori, Amy and Elise for your support, vines and advice. This is such a wonderful site and just what one needs when your kitty is sick.

I am giving her 10 mls of chicken stock with a tiny bit of her favourite canned food to make a very sloppy soup and she is eating that if I hold the plate and encourage her. It isn't much but at least she is eating it. And she is having some fluids when she has that. She won't have the chicken stock on its own, which she usually loves. She has had three lots of the sloppy soup so far. I hope I don't turn her off her favourite food by doing this but she wouldn't eat the raw food. She is taking a little bit of interest with what I am doing in the kitchen....she has come in here to be with me I think. She is following me with her eyes.
At least I know now why her BSLs have been high.

Ruth, when I asked the vet about anti nausea meds he said she could have an injection....I am not sure he has the tablets. I looked it up online and it looks like they are available in Aus but not sure he has them....I could be wrong....but I will ask. So far she has just had the one injection and I have no tablets to go on with.
I do have some bupe. Thanks for telling me what you do with a flare up.

Are you familiar with the Primer on Pancreatitis?

Hope she feels better soon. Giving Bupe on the gums or in the cheek pocket is great. I hope it helps her.

Julie, thanks for the Primer on Pancreatitis. I have read it before but it was good to read it again now and see if I am doing all the right things and to get hints. The bupe is in tablet form so I just hope she left it there and didn't swollow it.

I wasn't aware it came in tablet form. Is that how the vet told you to give it?
Yes. It is a sublingual tablet called Temgesic Sublingual Tablets (equivelant to buprenorphine 200 micrograms).
I only give her between 1/4 and a 1/2 tablet as 1 tablet makes her incapable of doing anything. I thought she was dying when she had the 1 tablet about a year ago when she had a bad attack of pancreatitis. She was incapable of eating, drinking, going to the toilet, or lifting her head. I sat up with her overnight expecting the worst. (I didn't realise it was the tablet doing it until later). After about 8 hours of this, she suddenly sat up and ate a whole plateful of food.! I don't like bupe at all really but she has to have something for the pain and if I give her the smaller amount she seems to be ok. It is quite hard to keep the tablet up under the gum. I find the best spot is up above the front teeth.

Hi Bron. You can get cerenia tablets from vets here in Australia. You can also inject temgesic if the vet gives you the liquid form if you find giving it orally an issue. I gave my Rosie the liquid temgesic orally and by injection at different times. It seemed more effective by injection but the dose may vary depending on how you give it. I found with my Rosie that cerenia was very good for vomiting but ondansetron was better for nausea. I gave her both as they can be given together. The brand name of ondansetron is zofran and you can get a prescription from the vet to buy it from the chemist if the vet doesn't have it. I am just mentioning all of this to give you more options if you and Sheba need them. I am sure your vet is doing a great job. I know how important easing nausea was for my Rosie who also had losec in addition to the nausea medication. My Rosie had gastric lymphoma so she had a lot of nausea from that and from the chemotherapy at times too. My Lucy had one cerenia injection a while ago and it was very effective but it was only for a short bout of vomiting that only lasted a few hours. So if you need ongoing cerenia you can definitely get it in tablet form from the vet. I hope your Sheba is better very soon. Sending healing prayers for Sheba and more hugs for you too. :bighug:

Thanks for that info Voula. It is really good to know. I have never really needed all of these drugs much before, so don't know a lot about their availability here. Sheba usually responds fairly quickly to the initial treatment with pancreatitis although last time she was in hospital for a few days but when she came home she was not on any meds. When I asked this morning for tablets for nausea, the vet said she could have an injection of the cerenia and the way he said it I assumed there were no tablets. I will definitely follow that up . Also the zofran. It would be good to have some on hand. I can't imagine the vet giving me the Temgesic to inject but I could ask........even though he knows I am a nurse! He is a very good vet bit a bit funny with things like that. I had some of the temgesic tablets at home still from the last time.
Thanks Voula for sending all that info it is really good.

@Voula
I meant to ask....when you said you gave the liquid temgesic to Rosie...was it the injectable form of the drug? Because I don't think we can get just the ordinary oral one here........but I could be wrong! I am pretty sure the vet told me before I would have to get it compounded if I wanted it orally .....not the injectable form.

Hi Bron. Our vet gave me some liquid temgesic and she said I could either give it orally or inject it. She put it in syringes already measured out and gave me the needles to attach to the syringes if I wanted to inject it. She has given me the liquid form for both Rosie and Lucy for Rosie's lymphoma once when we thought she may have had pancreatitis but she didn't and for Lucy's teeth issues until we saw the dental vet but I didn't end up using it as we saw the dental vet very quickly. The dental vet said the same that I could inject it or give it orally but Lucy did well after her dental and didn't seem to need any ongoing pain relief so I was pleased about that. I can ask our vet if you want but I am certain you can give the liquid form either way either subcutaneously by injection or orally as I know I gave the temgesic to Rosie by injection and orally too and it was the same liquid that I used. I got the syringes and needles to give the temgesic to Lucy as I thought she would tolerate an injection better. I just checked as I keep a record of the medications my girls have had and it was temgesic.

That ties in with what my vet said some time ago. I was sure he said that the injectable temgesic could be given orally...but as I wasnt going to be using it at the time, I didn't think much more about it. And this morning we only talked about the tablet form of the drug.

Oh Bron, I'm so sorry to hear Sheba is unwell, sending heaps of feel better vines to her, poor baby :bighug:. At least you have a dx and the appropriate meds, so I hope she soon starts to respond to her treatment. Take care :bighug: from us both

Thanks Suki. Looking back I think she has been brewing this for a couple of days.
She is still very quiet. I have been holding the plate for her to eat and she has been doing so with my encouragement. A little while ago she actually got up out of bed and came into the kitchen when she heard me getting something for her. And she ate it when I put it on the floor. So that is a step forward.
She is only eating 10 to 15 mls chicken broth with a little bit of Weruva Fowl Ball in it which is her favourite, but at least she is eating now and she looks as if she is more interested in things generally.

Well that's a good sign at least she is eating something, if not a lot. Probably just wants lots of extra attention and petting for reassurance while she is feeling off colour.

I'm so sorry to hear about Sheba's diagnosis, but it's good that you know what it is. Between what you know from past experience, and all the knowledge and experience here on the Board, I'm sure you'll get her through it just fine.

I found that holding the bowl helps a lot in getting Minka to eat. I wonder if part of that is that when they lower their head to eat, sometimes they get a little tummy acid going on. I believe I read on Tanya's site that you should elevate the bowl to avoid that. Anyway, Minka prefers that I hold it for her, so I do. Small meals at frequent intervals is also good when they have p-titis. And lots of fluids. Minka perks up visibly after her fluids when she's having a flare up.

Sending healing and appy vines. :bighug:

Bron...sorry to hear that Sheba has pancreatitis. At least you know what you are dealing with and you have lots of information for treating her.

Sending healing vines for Sheba and :bighug:for you. Get better soon Sheba!

Thanks Tricia for the information on how you manage pancreatitis. Every bit helps. Yes I have read where the bowl raised is a good idea. I have been trying to give Sheba small amounts often. Very soupy food. I agree about fluids perking them up. I have found the same thing with Sheba when she gets subQ fluids.
She is still very quiet but is eating the small amounts I am offering her with encouragement. I have given her her pm insulin so I hope she keeps eating a bit more. Her bsl is still high. Thanks for your support

Thanks Mary Ann for your support. It is appreciated. I hate it when Sheba is sick.

I'm sorry about the p-titis...as Ruth said, we hate it around here. Trix is the same way with pain meds now...they didn't bother her when she was younger/healthier, but when I gave her bupe and cypro last year when she had p-titis, I thought the same as you...she was so weak it was scary. Like Tricia's does for Minka, I hold the plate for Trix now, too....it developed as a habit when she was sick last year, and she decided she likes the personal service, so now I have to do it for about half her meals! But it really helps. DH was going to build her an elevated table, but she also likes to roam while eating o_O...so there was no point in building a stationary set up.

Sending tons of healing prayers to Sheba!!

Thank you Amy for your support and prayers. They mean a lot. Yes, I hate pancreatitis too. It just creeps up without warning. Sheba is a good eater so when she doesn't want to eat, I know she is sick.
She is eating this soupy food I am giving her at the moment if I hold the plate and encourage her. We are just going slowly. I am trying to make sure she keeps hydrated with these high BSLs. I am just thankful she is willing to eat at all.
