Tuxie has dropped a fair bit from his +3-385 +5-167 and +6-113. This shouldn't be from the dose increase as this is only the first cycle. I never know what that darn cat is going to do :banghead:

What you might want to do, Mary Ann, so that you can stay at this 6.25u dose a little longer, is to prevent him from going below 68 AT and therefore prevent a reduction. Sometimes doing that for even a few cycles can provide enough extra insulin to bring down the higher numbers in the rest of the cycle. I just gave Sue the link for Tashie's condo on Feeding the Curve because Frankie's doing a similar thing to Tuxie right now. If you're interested, it's in the Where Can I Find? post, in the second half under "feeding the curve: Tashie."

I saw your discussion in yesterday's post about the meters. Has anyone told you that many of us who used the Freestyle Lite meter moved away from them because of how they read? There are so many kinds of meters and they can measure differently. We started with a Freestyle and I really liked it, but the spreadsheet of a cat using the FS with the FS strips ends up having a characteristic look that is blue/yellow. You don't see how high the cat might be getting.

You can see the transition in punkin's ss here on January 22. Notice the days above then are a lovely blue/yellow (he'd had the SRT done and we let him run higher anticipating the effects of the SRT) and then after switching to a Relion - a very ugly mess of pink. We increased by 1.5u within the following week. I think we had a false sense that he was in better numbers than he actually was.

I am trying to do this, the same way Bron and Sheba have been using food/syrup to keep from getting to the reduction point. I was not expecting Tuxie to drop so much as he has this cycle so I will continue to monitor. I did give a teaspoon of MC at +6 to keep him from dropping too fast. I probably should have done that at +5.

The whole process of this is trial and error, based upon how the individual cat responds. You just learn as you go.

Have a great day!

Tuxie has had a nice run in the morning cycle. He had a lower than I am used to PMPS but I still shot the full dose. A little nervous to see what will happen after the big drop he did this morning.

Nice duration this cycle. Crossing fingers that shooting at the low PS will give you a great surf. I shoot anything greater than 50, but max is predictable.

Hi Mary Ann
Lovely AM cycle and a good surf in the blue and green numbers. I agree with Julie that it is trial and error and you learn as you go. You said today that you could probably have intervened at +5... That is great. Just plod on and just learn from the days when it goes pear shaped, but don't let them upset you. Every time I had a pear shaped day I learnt something from it to use at the next opportunity. And I'm still learning..

Thank you Meya and Bron. I did his +1.5 and he is at 286 so I am thinking this is still the food spike/ AM insulin fizzling out. I will continue to monitor in case he does another big drop like this morning. I just hope he doesn't decide to do a big bounce after such a nice morning cycle.

This shouldn't be from the dose increase as this is only the first cycle.

Frankie had an increase last night and he hit the blues for the first time in a couple of days.

What a great afternoon/evening for Tuxie. I only hope Frankie follows suit and stops bouncing!! I'll have to show him your spreadsheet and tell him how it's done!!

I'm another one with lots of bad things to say about the freestyle lite meter. It was the meter I bought when Vyktor was first diagnosed and wasn't yet on insulin - his vet at the time kept telling me it would be best not to treat him  - I thought he wasn't doing to badly thanks to the FS lite being so far off in higher numbers. Next thing you know Vyktor had DKA and I nearly lost him.

Nice work today from Tuxie and nice shooting too :)

Then I am wondering if I shouldn't trust my AT2 meter either. The readings between the AT2 and the FS Lite are always very consistent and both meters are made by the same company. I only used teh FS Lite to get an average of what a human reading would be but if the FS Lite is consistently 30-40% lower than the AT2, then maybe the AT2 doesn't read right either. :(

I feel better about my meter choices after reading this posting:

I especially like the comment from Carl & Polly & Bob:

Thank you Jill and Dara!

Just a reminder to everyone.... these rankings change every year. Please refrain from posting opinions based on "old" information, especially when making suggestions and offering advice about "what is the best meter for me to buy?" in the threads of new members.

This is what Rebecca has said for the past two years after the latest Consumer Reports have released their yearly meter rankings:

As far as ALL "True" meters being bad for cats, well, meters change and it would be helpful if we quit bashing meters for old results. _R...

Consumer Reports recently listed several meters with "true" in the name and also a FreeStyle meter as some of the best meters available.

I've posted this before and asked people to keep updated on info they post on this site. Meters change, diabetes care changes, life changes.

_Rebecca
You will notice that "Freestyle" and some "True" meters are ranked highly this year in terms of "reliability". Some higher than the most popular meters that we routinely advise people to purchase. If you have experienced recent problems with a specific meter, then feel free to share your experiences. But try not to exclude meters that have been poorly ranked two, three or more years ago. Just like everything else, products can be improved.

Thanks,

So since my results are consistent I will stay with my AT2 and FreeStyle Lite.
