Good afternoon everyone.

Here's Zeke's condo from Day 8 (I didn't post one yesterday as I had outstanding questions on the Day 8 post) http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/...y-8-should-we-be-worried.138015/#post-1423709

Day 9 Recap: 120 AMBG; 76 PMBG

Was happy to see a lower BG this morning (even if just a little lower). DH took Zeke to the vet this morning. Unfortunately, he had an empty bladder so they weren't able to run any urine tests. They did BW and the creatinine and BUN were the same as that from March. So we didn't really get any answer as to the cause of his current tummy issues.

Vet didn't feel any obstruction. For the diarrhea she prescribed Metronidazole (250mg, 1/4 tab x 2 per day). I was just curious, is this like a go-to, standard med for diarrhea? Isn't this an antiobiotic? Should she have done a specific test to insure that this AB is the right med for his current condition?

The plan is to clear up the tummy issues first and then we can start trying to identify the cause of his weight loss. Guess there a several possible scenarios - we'll just have to rule them out one a time.

Well, continued OTJ Trial vines for Eddie. No doubt (anti-jinx) that we're just a few short days away from a PARRRRR-TEEEEEE!!!!!

Hi! Billie is also on metronidazole right now for soft stool/GI inflammation. The way it was explained to me, it's an antibiotic that has anti-inflammatory properties and can help to normalize the gut bacteria, improving diarrhea. Maybe someone can explain it better than that, but it's definitely a good med for diarrhea.

It is helping Billie for sure. She had some weight loss, a lack of appetite, possible chronic pancreatitis, possible IBD, and she has had issues with food allergies in the past. She's a bit complicated and we haven't quite nailed down the source of the problem yet but she has been doing much better this week with the metronidazole. I hope Zeke feels better soon!!

Hi Deanna,

Thanks for sharing this information and your experience with this med. Okay, now I feel more comfortable giving it to him.

I hope Billie's condition continues to improve and that you're able to identify the root cause of her issues and determine it's something that can be remedied quickly.

Sending healing vines Billie's way.

That's basically what I was told too - and it did work great for punkin. I'd give it a try. I think the anti-inflammatory part is important. Punkin's gut always settled down within a day on it. For an antibiotic, I liked it - did the job and we never had any negative side effects.

Fingers crossed for good results from the metronidazole and green vines continued good numbers on Zeke's trial. Hopefully the meds will take care of any tummy troubles to ensure that Zeke solidly crosses that finish line.

Thanks Jen, the vines are definitely helping. Hopefully Zeke will be joining Eddie (you know where).

And the vet was ok with his creat, BUN, and phosphorus? If it were me, I'd still make the effort to get urine sample over there to check the USG.

I'm so glad Zeke is doing better, and without the meds! Maybe just the threat of having it shoved down his throat did the trick! :joyful:

Happy Day 10!

Go Zeke! Go Zeke! Go Zeke! Go Zeke! Go Zeke! Go Zeke! Go Zeke! Go Zeke! Go Zeke! Go Zeke!

I have a tiny kitty who has many issues and one of them is very loose stool. He uses Metronidazole and to me it is a godsend.
His quality of life is much better and I have much less mess to clean up as well.

Happy day 10!!!

Yo, Zeke. You is lucky, that metronidazole tastes yucky. Mamabeans tries to aim it down my throat, but sometimes I've chewed...YUCK!! But is making poops better, doesn't have to sprint to LB. I's excited bout your upcoming pawty, so keep it up!!
Wuv,
Lulu

Thanks Marje. When you say "if it were me", you get my undivided attention. From what DH said, she didn't seem to see his values as any kind of emergency, just something to monitor. She also said that the "first pee" sample practice is more so for dogs. I prefer to be much more proactive so we will do the sample in the near future.

Well, this morning we had a reoccurance so we started him on the metro. Hopefully we can get this resolved once and for all.

Thanks again for the OTJ Trial encouragement.

Yes Linda, that certainly sounds like a godsend. So glad you've found something that is helping your kitty. So excited about Jack's trial. His ss looks fantastic. Way to go you two.

Hey Lulu, you're so right. Turns out my tummy issues hadn't cleared up. Mama mixed the metro in my fuds - Yuck! I think mama didn't read the directions
:banghead: No way I was gonna eat that. Fortunately, mama has these delicious duck and pea pill pocket treats. Yummy! Thanks for visiting Lori & Lulu.

As others have said metronidazole is an antibiotic that has anti-inflamatory properties. My ex cat takes a low matainance dose a couple times/week for her IBD. So far it has greatly reduced her vomiting. She absolutely hates it though! She gets a liquid prep of it. Keeping it cold helps reduce the flavor. She has just started taking an oil based chicken flavored prep of it and she likes that much better.

The reason I mentioned the first pee sample was because we recently went through this with Gracie. Her creatinine and BUN were normal but her USG much lower than it should have been but the samples were later in the day and she had been drinking more because her ALT was elevated (they can drink more water due to live inflammation). On two separate occasions several days apart, I took in the first pee sample and our vet checked it with a refractometer and she was, in fact, concentrating her urine. Subsequently, as her liver values came down, and she drank less, her USG was normal early and later in the day.

I would just suggest you compare his creatinine and BUN to his labs from previous years. If they are the same, no worries. If they have increased, I would check the USG in the early morning pee. If he is not concentrating his urine, I would consider that it might be an early warning of CKD. At that point, the best thing to do is feed lower phosphorus foods and monitor his labs. You wouldn't typically start subq fluids until his creatinine is up around 3.5. You would also want to keep an eye on his hematocrit (HCT) to be sure it doesn't fall below 30. Right now, it's at 39 so that's fine.

I might be an alarmist but I've had five cats with CKD. The first time was so long ago that there wasn't any internet so I just did what the vet said. The second one, who was my sweet Maxie soul kitty, I trusted my vet and even though I read that his P was too high (it was 7 when it should have been no higher than 4.5) when I asked her, she said "it's in normal range". It wasn't until later that I realized "normal range" includes kittens who are making bone and should have a much higher P level. My darling Maxie went downhill very fast and I lost him much sooner than I should have. I changed vets. Our next three with CKD all stayed stable for a very long time and none of them, including the 21 year old, succumbed to CKD because we were so proactive.

I just like to know the devil I dance with ;):):bighug:

Good to know. It does seem this is a very beneficial med. Thanks for sharing the experience you've had with it.

Thanks again Marje for the advice. I will locate his old labs. We'll certainly want to be proactive with Zeke (and Ivan and Mia too).

I'm so sorry you've had to deal with this disease so many times. Our kitty Irie Ites died from kidney failure at age 18. Makes me wonder if he had CKD and we just didn't know it.
