Paw or Ear??

Shiloh really hates the ear. But after I did her test just now, I tried her paw. Got really very little blood, but she barely reacted. If I use the lancet pen, any advice on the depth? I had it on 3.

And on top of this, I'm now dealing with a very hyper dog who pulled a front leg muscle this morning. Will it never stop?

When I paw pad test I use the alternate site cap for the lancet pen (it's the clear one without a depth adjustment for the Confirm - most likely the same for the Prime). I think it probably goes a little deeper than most of the settings on the adjustable one, plus you can use it to keep applying pressure after you activate the pen until you can see you're getting some blood. :)

I hope your dog feels better soon - some days it really just doesn't ever seem to end!

I have always tested from the paw pad. What you might want to try is a baby sock filled with rice or oats; microwave for about 30 seconds and apply that to the paw pad to warm it up a little before you lance. It has always worked well for us.

I've only ever tried the ear (the way Bandit fought me the first few weeks of testing I couldn't even imagine trying his paw!), but if she's not reacting to the paw pokes and you're getting enough blood for the test, I say go for it! I can say that after a few weeks of ear testing and treats (and Bandit being wrapped in a blanket instide a basket for all his tests), Bandit stopped struggling and just let me do them. So if the paw pokes stop working for whatever reason, don't give up on the ear.

I test Goof on the paw, I use a different one each time, I set the lancet thingy on 4, he doesn't even flinch.

Thanks everyone. I think she is starting to realize that I am doing this for her own good. I tried to get a sample and didn't get enough, even after four sticks. I decided to give up for a little while. Next thing I know, she wanted up in my lap, rubbing her head on my hand. I tried one more time, and got it this time. She stayed in my lap for a few minutes, being petted, then jumped down and went to lay down. :)

Her +8 was 220.

And I think I JUST figured out what may be the problem. I was using the lancets I had left from my mom's test kit. They are the ultra-thin 30 gauge. I read somewhere that 28 gauge is better for the cats?

Where do you get your 26? My walmart doesn't have them, and they are out of stock online? What brand? I was looking for the Reli On, since that is the meter I have, but I guess the lancet device doesn't matter.

That's the best plan - if you can't get blood after a few attempts (we usually go for 3), wait a little while and try again. :)

And yes on the 26 gauge lancets - they make it much, much easier especially to begin with. I think most of the lancets available fit all devices - I've bought the Freestyle lancets and used them with the ReliOn lancing device before now when our local Walmart didn't have any of the gauge I wanted. :)

I got mine at Walmart--they always seem to have them in stock, and I use the Relion Lancet (I liked it better than the complicated softclix contraption that came with my Aviva Accuchek meter). Maybe you could order online, or ask the pharmacy when they plan to restock their supply? http://www.walmart.com/ip/ReliOn-Thin-Lancets-100-count/34088206

Look for alternate site testing lancets; these are in the 25-28 gauge range.
