911 Diabetic 15 yr old w/ constipation

My 15 yr old cat has not pooped or ate since Monday night. He has not had lantus since Tuesday! Tuesday evening I came home and found little spots of blood on the floor. He has been back and forth in the litter box squatting and straining. I have tried olive oil, pumpkin, and his usual lactulose. Wednesday I took him to the vet and they did an enema and urinalysis to check for UTI. The called me in the evening and said YES he has a UTI and to pick up an antibiotic (clavamax) for him this morning. They also told me if he does not poop he will have to come back today for another enema. I refused surgery because I can not afford it and it is not guaranteed. The vet said with feeling his belly that he seems impacted. He has been on lactulose since January and lantus since I found out he is diabetic. His sugar had dropped to 30 yesterday so quickly I poured the Karo syrup down his mouth. I got to the vet and it was a perfect 100. Please any suggestions would help?? I've been up half the night debating do I let him suffer, do I try another enema, do I put him to sleep, do I try other home remedies? Thank you

I hope you can get your kitty to eat: 3 days is too long to go without food. And if nothing is going in, nothing is there to come out. You may have to assist-feed. Perhaps your kitty will eat some meat baby food (Beech Nut Stage 1, which is just meat and broth--no onions!). Try holding the bowl to encourage him to eat, or try finger-feeding.
Clavamox is an antibiotic and will kill off all of the "good" bacteria in addition to the "bad" bacteria throughout the intestinal system. So you should also be giving a pro-biotic to keep the intestines healthy. FortiFlora (which you can get from your vet or on Amazon) sprinkled on food is fine. If your cat will eat yogurt, get some plain yogurt with active cultures. Of course you first have to get your kitty to eat!

If he is truly impacted, this could be an emergency situation. I would look over the link that BJ provided and see what they recommend in order to diagnose an impaction or if there are other options you haven't already tried.
 
Is he eating enough? He needs about 75% of normal or he is in danger of developing fatty liver disease. I would bring him back to the vet. My mom had an obstruction once. She hadn't even stopped going. The obstruction was farther back so some stool had gotten through. :bighug:

Yes he's been at the vet since 9am I just picked him up. They gave him fluids and another enema. They said he did pass a lot of hard stool so praying this worked. He is still very lethargic
 
I would not add Miralax until the vet says it's OK to do so. Using any product for constipation if there's an obstruction can cause other problems.
 
Just piling on more prayers...between the UTI, constipation, and enema, he's probably worn out and will need a little time to bounce back. Plus clavamox is notorious for causing appy and tummy issues. I agree with Ella that assist-feeding may be necessary...double-check with your vet on that, though. But as Elise said, enough food going in is very important. I hope he starts feeling better ASAP.
 
I would just like to,say, my cat can not take miralax!,it raises her bg into the 500-600 range! So be careful. Ther is little research on this , but I found out after I had started
her on this for 3 weeks she kept shooting up to HI! It was scarring me . So I stopped vitamins and Miralax . Now she is back down into the 100-200 range. And the vitamins don't cause a spike. SO it had to be the miralax!
that's what it does to some people as well.i use the natural hairball remedy , once or twice a day about a cc. This seems to work fine.

I use plain puréed pumpkin (1 tsp twice a day) and about 1/4 tsp coconut oil every second day to keep Vyktor regular (at 18 1/2 he's pooping better than he has in yrs) but as Sienne mentioned I would check with the vet first in your circumstances. Sending vines for your gorgeous kitty.

Where do you get the pumpkin, and how do you get him to eat it?
Just wondering as well have given Angel foods that have bits of pumpkin in them ,she seems to pick them out..

I just get regular canned pumpkin- NOT pumpkin pie mix, from the grocery store, and mix a little bit in to their food.
My kitties also get coconut oil daily. I have found that it helps prevent them from hacking up hairballs.
 
I steam cubed fresh pumpkin and then freeze and take it out of the freezer as needed. It's soft enough that I can purée it just by mashing it with the back of the tsp. Vyktor can be a bit fussy with food, if it was little pieces of pumpkin he would avoid it too so I mix the purée through his food. We started with a 1/4 tsp twice daily and built up from there until we had the desired effect. I think at first he didn't even notice such a tiny amount and now, if he's noticed he's decided it's okay.

With my mums cat we can just put the puree on top like a cherry and he will vacuum it up - but he would eat almost anything...
 
If and only if she needed carbohydrate, the body can break down a fat molecule to create them as needed.
 
Thanks for the information,I've ordered some and the pumpkin, I,will try this again hopefully this time I can get her to eat it..
