Hi Voula,
I am so pleased Lucy is having better numbers and some green ones too. That is great news.
I agree, bounces are a real nuisance.
Hope you are keeping well too.

I have just seen on Serryn's thread you mentioned Lucy has the PAW green lipped mussel powder. I bought it ages ago to give to Sheba but never got around to giving it to her because she started to have the fish oil capsules with the raw diet and I didn't know if it would be too much to give as well. It is still in date and sitting in the cupboard. I could ask the vet but I honestly don't know if he would know the answer. He is very good but I don't think feline nutrition is his strong point.
Do you give Lucy fish oil?

I only give my Lucy the green lipped mussel powder and the zobaline and I don't give any fish oil at the moment. I had thought of trying the fish oil but as you said maybe the fish oil and the green lipped mussel powder together might be too much. Dr Bruce Syme in Castlemaine is good with nutrition and he does answer questions on forums on facebook sometimes. His product website is www.vetsallnatural.com.au and he has a very good reputation as a vet according to people I know.

Thank you Rhiannon, Serryn and Bron. We are back in green at +2 now. Bron thank you for your good wishes for me too. I am doing well after my surgery. I do feel tired a lot from my Crohn's disease but otherwise I am okay. :) The bounces are a nuisance but we can hope they get less frequent and not as high as time goes on.

I think i'd be tempted to fatten her dose a little bit and see if you can get her more in green. You could probably try an increase of 0.25u if you want - the 2.25u just got her barely into the 40's before. Or just fatten the dose to something less than 2.25.

she does look great. :D

Max did what Lucy is doing with blues and some yellows with less green so I fattened the disease and I think it might be working (anti-jinx). I'm glad you are feeling better. I forgot you were having surgery. Good luck if you increase.

Thank you Julie. I was thinking the same thing to fatten the dose as we are mostly getting blue numbers which are good but more greens would be better so I think I will fatten the dose during the coming week.

Voila, thank you for the Bruce Syme website. It is excellent and has an option to emaiL him with a question, so I will ask him about the green lipped mussel powder. Thanks!

Thank you and that is great that Max is doing well with the fattened dose. I have been thinking of doing the same with my Lucy as more green numbers would be good.

Hi again Julie. On the other hand maybe staying at the current dose for a while yet might help Lucy to get more comfortable in lower numbers even though the numbers could be lower and in this way decrease the length and extent of the bouncing which seems to be happening now. It's like exposure therapy where we gradually get used to something and then it feels natural but I think I might try fattening the dose this coming week.

I'm not sure if that works or not. I haven't seen it, but you never know. The adage that I was taught was "keep showing them the green" in order to get a cat's body used to normal numbers.

She's had 12 shots at this dose since the last skipped shot. I'm thinking if she were going to go solid green on it, you'd have seen it by now. Even with some green nadirs you can increase the dose if all the numbers aren't under 120. The protocol would suggest increasing by 0.25u.

Increasing the dose:
  • Hold the dose for 3 - 5 days (6 - 10 consecutive cycles) if nadirs are less than 200 before increasing the dose by 0.25 unit.
    • if your cat is new to numbers under 200, it is recommended to hold the dose for at least 8-10 cycles before increasing.
    • when your cat starts to see nadirs under 100, hold the dose for at least 10 cycles before increasing.
The good news is that since we've now talked about it, it's like the gauntlet has been thrown down and it might very well be enough for Lucy to take action and to drop into green numbers and make the dose increase not be needed. ;) It happens a lot! :D:D:D

Thank you Julie for that information. I think we did need to increase the dose slightly though now as you said just when you consider increasing a dose the numbers improve again. :) We will hold this dose for a while longer now.

Sometimes I am uncertain how often to test. When the numbers are close to 2.8/50 I think it is wise to test in half an hour again. Sometimes I think I might test too much but I want my Lucy to be safe even though her ears are a little bruised at times.

In the first half of the cycle, until you've seen it turn around and begin to rise, I'd test every 30 minutes if I was getting close to 50.

I always looked at the difference between the current test and the one before that. If punkin was dropping fairly quickly, I might test more often than if he'd only dropped a few points in an hour. Once he passed his nadir I rarely tested after that until the next preshot.

I may have slightly overdone the high carb food at 2.7/49 but my Lucy really enjoyed it and what started as a small amount grew as she kept asking for more and I could not refuse her requests for more food. :cat::) Lucy only eats low carb food now so it is a real treat for her when she does get to eat high carb food. I probably should have kept giving small amounts of low carb food with each test as I had been doing as the glucose level was not very low but I thought a small amount might be good. The amount grew as Lucy kept wanting more and more of the high carb food and it became a meal rather than a snack. :cat::)

Looks like Lucy doesn't want an increase after all. :D Both my kitties go crazy when the can of high carb food comes out.

Hi Wendy. Yes it seems that Lucy doesn't want an increased dose. I guess it is like us if we have been on a diet and we are allowed to eat something we really enjoy like chocolate or ice cream we can go a little wild too. :)

Usually my Lucy doesn't have greatly increased glucose levels in response to low carb or high carb food unless I put honey in the food. Clearly today we have found an amount of high carb food that works. :cat::) Though it could be a bounce but I think it was probably the food.
