Well Tuxie has decided to do an active cycle and health problems...UTI possible URI. I had him at the vet earlier...this is my posting from this morning:

So by mistake I only did a .25 unit increase instead of the .5 unit I was going to. I was just not awake this morning. Better too little than too much though.

So in spite of urinary discomfort, vet stress and having medium carbs before I left for the vet he has actually dropped to a +8 of 94. I think I am going to hold the dose at the .25 increase for a few days until the other issues settle down.

Yay! Green has returned to Tuxie's ss! That's super. Since you went with 0.25u just stay on this dose for now. I wouldn't increase him again tonight.

I might try to keep him above 68 for a while by giving him carbs if he looks like he's headed into that vicinity. Just thinking that keeping him at 5.25u where he's seeing green numbers, might help some of the rest of those higher numbers come down. Sometimes a cat needs just a little more insulin for a few days to help flatten out those high numbers.

If you want to do that, just feed him some of his regular low carb when he gets around 80 to see if it will help surf along in that range for a while. The more hours he stays in normal numbers, the more his body will accept them as normal.

Does that make sense?

Thanks Julie...that all makes sense to me.

I am expecting a bit of a bounce today...after the lower number, the vet visit and the urinary problems he could go anywhere today. I will hold the new dose for the next day or so and see where he ends up once he is settled back to his normal. Unfortunately I ended up giving him medium carb when we got back and I took his reading so I expect he is heading back up. Actually +8 was rather late for his nadir but his day has been a bit topsy turvy. Unless for some strange reason he has a low PMPS I will continue with the new dose for now.

As the antibiotics work on the infection his BGs may decease. Usually it's not a problem, ie, you don't need to decrease the dose in expectation of that happening, but it's just something for you to be aware of and watch for.

I will definitely be watching his numbers for that. He actually just finished a round of zenequin 12.5 (10 days) on Monday for a previous UTI and was doing fine until this morning. So with the increased dose and a 14 day run hopefully that will knock out the UTI and if he IS working on an URI it will hopefully also help with that. Poor Tuxie..always seems to be something as well as the high glucose levels. Once he has finished this round of AB I will wait a couple of weeks and have a complete bloodwork done to see if anything has changed in the last 2 or 3 months. I wonder if I should do the whole thing and have another T4 done as well...his last one was the end of November and he was fine then.

On the lighter side..Tuxie and his sister are indoor cats but they come out on the patio with me for short periods of time to watch the birds at the feeder. Last time Tuxie had a UTI he wanted to go outside..thee was still some snow and tried to pee there. He did the same thing this morning. Just a little while ago they were out and Tuxie proudly walked over to the dirt spot and did a nice big pee. He certainly looked proud of himself. :)

If Tuxie is having repeated UTIs, it might be that the infection has gone into his kidneys. Did the vet happen to mention that? Hopefully this new round of AB will knock it out completely.

Sending healing vines!

Tricia, thanks for the input.

The only UTI Tuxie has ever had was the one two weeks ago. At this point the vet thinks that the old dose (12.5mg) was not enough for an almost 14 lb cat, so Tuxie is getting 25mg and rather than 10 days he will be on it for 14 days. Tuxie is already responding to the zenequin, same as he did the last time and is now peeing more normally, even after just the one dose. ButI will be doing a follow up once he has finished these AB and fingers crossed that that is as far as this issues goes.
