Thanks so much, Carla. Looking good so far, just took a +5 test and she`s in the green.

Hope you and Furball have a fabulous weekend.

Lulu is looking great! :DI usually try for another test in a half hour if kitty is in the 50's and on the way down. Could be she's thinking this is too much insulin.

Okay, I`m on it, thanks Wendy. I`ll remember that next time.
Addendum: She`s up a bit to 68, tested at +7.5

I'm planning on going hiking tomorrow -- my spirit desperately needs replenishing and nature is just the thing to do it. The thing is, I won't be around for several hours to check on Lulu, and her BG has dipped down to the high 50s the past few mornings . Should I feed her a higher carb food tomorrow morning (FF turkey dinner with cheese and gravy)? I don't think my hiking group would be too jazzed if I were to bring her along and carry her in my backpack. Actually, neither would Lulu

TIA

Do you have an autofeeder? If not, the other thing you can do is freeze some MC or HC in some ice cube trays. How far after shot time are you leaving? If it's a couple hours after AMPS and you take a test before you go, you might be able to see what the cycle will play out like, and leave her higher carb food if it looks like she'll be heading down.

I agree, exercise in nature is part of my sanity program for dealing with FD. :)

From +what to +what do you expect to be gone? Sounds like you may need to leave a timed feeder or frozen food with her separate from the civvies.

Do you do anything special when you are home and she is in the high 50s? If not, I would just leave her the usual LC food, augmented with some MC, but do make sure you leave out enough food. HC might be overkill and send her soaring.

Enjoy your hike. If you know that Lulu will eat when you aren't home, I think she'll be fine. When you've been at this longer you'll know her patterns better. We often are out all day, hiking or canoeing, and have found that Rusty "saves" his food until we get home and then dives in. (Our previous feline diabetic, Stu, did the same thing.) Rusty has pretty predictable cycles, but Stu was all over the place. He was always fine. If you have real concerns, perhaps a neighbor can stop in to make sure that Lulu eats.

Have a great hike tomorrow!

I plan on leaving about 2 hrs after her shot, so will take a reading and go from there. I do have just one timed feeder, so may have to isolate Lulu from the other two (which I hate to do -- stick her in my spare room -- I do have a LB in the bathroom of the spare room, and there is a kitty condo and windows she can look out). I'll probably be gone about 6 hours total, this is a short one. Hopefully, Lulu will be regulated to the point where I can enjoy some all-day hikes this summer...I only live an hour away from our beautiful Canadian Rockies.

Hi Ella - no, I don't do anything special when she's in the high 50's...just take another BG test about an hour later to see if she's heading downward, which she hasn't so far. I'm prepared if she goes down into the 30s, but she hasn't even come close to that yet. I'm new at this and such a worry-wart. So much to learn, sometimes I think I'm becoming obsessive-compulsive about this kitty diabetes...

If you test her at +2 and she's down from her AMPS, then leave the higher carb food out for her. Leaving plates of food out in her own room also works if she's a grazer. You can do the timed feeder if she's a hoover.

Learning Lulu's patterns so you can have a life is important. I live 5 minutes walk from trails in the woods, and a 10 minute drive from the ocean. Have a great hike tomorrow! It sounds like you'll be well prepared.

Thank you. My daughter lives in Vancouver, one of the most beautiful cities in the world imho, and would love it if I moved out there. Can't afford the cost of housing, or I'd be gone in a heartbeat.

Oh yeah, Lulu will eat; in fact, Lulu`s love of food is, I`m sure, the reason she has diabetes. She got pretty fat (my fault for overfeeding).
Thanks, I can`t wait to get out of the city and fill my lungs with fresh country air.
