Sammy had a nice break from all the pokes last night I didn't do a follow up because he had such a fabulous BG at regular test time. This morning he is a little higher than last night. Honestly, I think Sammy is one of those cats that has a dropping BG when he is nervous, because that BG last night was just after the VET and getting his blood pressure tested. I might do a follow up BG test around +5-+6 today just to see if he does drop a bit mid cycle.

@Wendy&Neko Yes, I am glad that I got his blood pressure tested to have a baseline. Now that I think about it I sort of wish I had a baseline for all readings. It is definitely food for thought for future, but right now I probably won't do any extra tests because we have been spending so much money on the tests and treatment that are necessary. But I will definitely consider getting a full work up very soon. In fact, I might just find out how much it is so that I can consider it for the next check-up visit.

Hope everyone has a fabulous Saturday. I have a full day planned, and have already started my list of things that must get done this week before I can leave for knit camp.

Looking great Sammy!! :D :D Great to see both a PM and the following AM reading both in green on the first attempt - makes you feel so much better doesn't it? :D

I'm sorry I've been missing Sammy's OTJ Trial but he's doing great!

I read back through some of your condos and I want you to know there is a lot you can do to keep him stable with CKD. Our Gussie lived with CKD for four years....extremely stable and his creatinine never got over 3.5 or phosphorus over 5. He did not pass away from CKD but likely had lymphoma. I think he did so well for so long because we were extremely proactive in the treatment of his CKD from day one of diagnosis. I understand you are giving him 200 mls of fluids right now and that is quite a bit for where he is. In fact, in general, fluids are not even started until the creatinine gets to be around 3.0 or 3.5. But he should be getting fluids and he should be getting them daily. Keep in mind that subq fluids are not as likely to drop the creatinine as drastically as IV fluids will but IV fluids have to be given at the vet...usually an in hospital stay.

IMHO, it is well worth it to have a full superchem/CBC done on him now. There are so many areas that you could do relatively inexpensive treatments for to keep him stable for a long time. For example, phosphorus control is critical as is controlling anemia. Both are fairly simple to address now using the lower phosphorus/LC foods and also supplementing with some B vitamins (specific ones). If you want more info, please let me know. I'm always happy to help; I've had four cats with CKD so I've danced this dance a lot. Only one of them actually crossed due to kidney issues and that was because he really had polycystic kidney disease which presents as CKD but is always fatal and usually fast once the kidney digression starts.

@Marje and Gracie Thanks. Sammy's Creatinine is currently 3.1, but we started doing fluids when it was 2.4, but the fluids were only done about every 2-3 days when it was lower. Right now we are giving 150 ml of fluids until next Wednesday. The reason we decided to do this is because DH won't do daily fluids while I am gone, so I trying to bring down Sammy's numbers a bit before I leave for Knit Camp. DH will do 150 ml of fluid every other day while I am gone. If I can get him do do fluids daily we will drop down to 100 ml.

I do want to do a full pannel, but I might wait another month or so unless it is cheaper than I think I will ask at the vet when we go next week. I just can't afford to keep spending money like it is going out of style.

Ok. I got the 200 ml from his 4/8 condo:

The vet gave the go ahead to give 200 ml fluids every night for the next week, and then 125-150 fluids every other day for the week and a half I am at camp. The only reason we will be decreasing while I am at camp is because DH just isn't the doctoring type and it will be like pulling teeth to get him to do it every other day. I had really hoped that he wouldn't have to give fluids at all while I was gone. Hopefully he will do what needs to be done for Sammy's sake.

I honestly don't think that giving him 150mls of subq fluids every day between when you started every day and when you are leaving will affect his creatinine. Again, it normally takes IV fluids to bring the creatinine down.

Whenever you decide to do a full panel, if you want me to look at the numbers, just let me know. I can only tell you how valuable it is....and money saving in the long run.....to know sooner than later where he stands with his other numbers relating to CKD and there are several. It's not all about the creatinine and BUN and they can go downhill really fast if the potassium is low, if they are anemic, etc. Again...simple things that don't require a lot of money to keep stable. However, if they are allowed to progress quickly because they weren't addressed early, than you could either end up spending much more money in a crisis...or having to make a decision you don't want to make.

We we go in for blood work on Tuesday we will have his BUN, Creatinine, Potassium, and Phosphorus checked. Is there anything else that I really should have tested right away? I will see what the cost is to have these tests done, and also the full panel and if it seems more cost effective to just do the full panel then we will do that.

I originally had planned on doing 200 ml, but then decided to do just 150 ml. I figured that the Creatinine would be affected much in a week, but I was hoping to see the BUN come down a bit. I am wasting my money having the test within 7 days of the last test?

Sammy just can't seem to hold those PMBG under 100. I will probably test again before I go to bed to see if he drops down under 100, but even if he does it will probably be due to the fluids more than anything.

With CKD, it's good to at least have a thorough set of labs to know where you are. I don't know why any vet would just do a TP, an ALT,creatinine, BUN, and glucose.

If it were me, I'd get a good baseline for where he is now which means a Superchem/CBC. That way, you can look at his creat/BUN, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, RBCs, hemoglobin, hematocrit.

Maybe feed him at a.m. +9 to bring his PMBG down.

@Marje and Gracie, I pretty much provide food every hour or two up to 1 hour before PMPS, maybe that is my problem, he might be eating too close to test time. I might need to go back to removing food 2-3 hours before the next test time.

@Marje and Gracie , Okay, I will try that tonight and again tomorrow during the day. Hopefully Sammy won't wake me up in the middle of the night because he wants food. Maybe it would be better to try it during the day first. LOL!

Go Sammy - happy day 8, over the hump!

There's some wisdom to that. Try the a.m. +9, as I originally said and see how it affects the PMBG. If it works, then you can decide on what to do with the p.m. +9.
