Good morning!
Lulu's amps was a bit lower from yesterday's. Still high, I'm thinking of increasing her dosage (currently 1.5 u BID) starting tomorrow. Being fairly new at this, I'm open to suggestions. Meanwhile, we're slowly transitioning over to a 100% wet diet.
Many thanks.

Good morning Lori! How much dry food is Lulu getting? From my experience the dry food seriously spikes the BG and holds it up much longer. If it were me I would be very careful about how much I increase before completely transitioning to WET Low Carb food. The reason I feel this way is because if she is still getting dry and the numbers are not responding and you increase once you get to an all WET diet Lulu might end up going too low.

Thanks, Tina. My biggest fear is putting her into a hypo state. She is currently eating only about 1/4 cup of Purina OM dry. Now that I'm getting more familiar with the home testing, I can test her every 2 hr during the day...I go to bed early, so getting p.m. tests hasn't been happening so far.
I am transitioning all three of my kitties over to wet food, despite the vet's advice. I asked her a couple of weeks ago about dry food not being ideal for diabetic cats, but she said this Purina OM was okay because it was higher in protein. After doing tons of research on this board and Dr. Lisa's info, I found that the carb level of this food is still too high. I love my vet, but I'm going to use this board for feline diabetes management.

What I have found is that the Vets, who are not diabetes experts, don't always know what is best. I highly recommend using the advice on this board verses your vet in this situation. I also love my vet, but I just don't think they see enough cases where they can really understand everything. Plus, your vet isn't going to be available 24/7 for questions where as this board will be. I learned that the hard way. In the beginning of BOTH of our journeys (now and 5 years ago) I tried to listen to the vet and the advice on this board, and the advice was conflicting. This caused me a lot of turmoil. I suggest you share information with your vet, but rely more on the advice here then what the vet suggests.

So is Lulu getting 1/4 cup twice a day or is that amount split over two meals? If you can speed up the transition at all, Elizabeth will be much better off, and the new diet will benefit your other kitties as well. I am not familar with the Royal Canine Calorie controlled food, have you reviewed the food list to see what the carb count is on that food. You want to shoot for something under 10%, but some cats require less carbs. Sammy is mostly on 4-5% carbs with just a bit of 8%. There are several food lists the one I used 5 years ago is Janet & Blinky's list, but there is an updated List I just can't find it right now, but as soon as I find the link I will post it here.

There is also a lot of great information over on the Catinfo.org website.

I just did a BG test (+3.5), her levels have come down quite a bit since this morning. This time it took a few pokes to get blood, with Lulu growling and yeowling all the while :(

She is only getting 1/4 cup, although I suspect the other two are eating most of the dry. I've just returned from picking up a case of Friskie's pate. I'm no longer going to feed any dry (other than treats); my eventual aim is to make my own cat food, I've already found some great tips on this forum. I'll be watching Lulu's BG levels closely over the next 3 days, won't adjust her dosage just yet until we see what the 100% wet food diet does.

I am going to discourage you from using any dry food, even for treats. I was giving Sammy 3-5 pieces of kibble as treats and found that even that little bit can raise BG and keep it higher for a longer period of time. If you want to do treats I highly recommend freeze dried treats. I recently started giving Sammy Orijen Wild Boar Cat Treats and he loves them. They have several varieties. And when Sammy doesn't seem interested in food I break up the treats and sprinkle them over his food and then he gobbles it all up.

By the way, once you test more it will become much easier to get blood. Also I make sure Sammy's ears are nice and warm before I start poking. That helps a lot. It usually takes me less than a minute to test and record the results.

Just got back from picking up some more Pure Bites freeze dried treats, the dry Medi-treats are no longer on the menu. Checked Lulu`s BG, it is lower than it`s ever been on any tests we`ve done since her Dx.

I think we've had the best day since Lulu's diagnosis. I've gotten rid of the dry food and she and my other two are now on a wet diet. BG tests were lower, one even went into the blue zone. This is encouraging.

Nice blue! Yeah for making the transition to wet. :) I'd give her a couple more days on an all wet food diet and see what it does to her numbers before increasing. Kitties can have digestive problems switching to all wet. Maybe try adding a probiotic such as FortiFlora to help her out.

ETA: I suggest putting a note in the Remarks part of the spreadsheet that today is the day you did the all wet food transition. Food plays an important role.

Hi Tina, I picked some of these Orijen Wild Boar treats up this morning, as my trio turns there noses up at the Pure Bits dried whitefish treats I bought. They absolute love them. I`m trying to wean them over to a raw diet. Lulu loves the raw food, but Otis and Coco not so much. I`m going to steal your idea of sprinkling the treats over the food and see what happens.

My cats don't like the Pure Bits either.

Definitely do the sprinkle thing.
