Panthers numbers were really low yesterday after I got home from work he was at 129 when I left at 3:30am 99 by 1pm 100 at shot time 3pm (.5).he dropped to a 32 and slowly came back up to a 72 at 9pm then dropped again by 9:30pm to 38 and back up to a 55at 1am (Monday morning)shot time was 3am away and he was at 39 he had a carb can and syrup on his gums he's back up to 63at noon my question is he regulating him self where he might be able to do an OTJ trial run or something else happening he's acting normal and everything it's just weird.

I don't feel super comfortable giving dosing advice, but since nobody else has been by and based on these 30s you should not give .5u this evening. He's earned at least a .25u reduction based on tight regulation.

For future reference, I also don't think we are supposed shoot a number below 50, much less one in the 30s.

Again, I'm new and not comfortable with dosing advise, but these are the rules in the protocol and that I've used in my own experience. 30s are serious, check the Handling Low Numbers sticky for more info. Have you given HC food and/or Karo/honey today? You need to get him out of the 40s, but I don't know if you should shoot tonight or not. Wait for advice from a more experienced member.

The last entry I see on the SS is a 48 which is still too low. Given how long he was in low numbers yesterday, he might be more sensitive to insulin. At this point, I think I'd skip his next dose. If nothing else, it'll help drain the depot from the .5U shot so that if Panther does go back on insulin you won't have that depot to deal with. His dose this morning should have been .25U but please skip tonight.

@Patricia & Noodle - I'm a slow typer.;)

Thanks, Wendy. I thought she should skip, too, but didn't know for sure to advise that myself given the DKA experience.

I'd definitely skip this afternoon's shot Margaret....with him going so low, he may be ready to go OTJ or not, but it'll help drain his depot.

We'd never shoot when their BG is in the 30's....Most of us will shoot when it's 50, but that's only after having a lot more data on how our cats respond. With the way Panther is responding, I'd be hesitant to shoot anything under 150 especially if you can't stay home with him to test (at least until you have much more data on him)

If he goes back up and needs to go back on insulin, you'd only give .25 now....he earned another reduction when he dropped below 50 yesterday. That's a very tiny amount

Not sure if the spreadsheet is right, but we do not recommending shooting numbers below 50. Also, if he'd had high carb food and syrup on his gums, we'd stall and wait a couple of hours after that to test and see if he was high enough to shoot. We suggest not feeding for two hours before shot time, to make sure he's high enough to shoot. If he goes low in those two hours you have to feed him, but then either stall the shot until he's high enough without influence of food or skip it.

From your condo yesterday http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/3-29-15-panther-amps-129-5-10-99.135348/ I see there was some discussion about how much insulin he's been getting lately, if any. Another reason to skip and see what happens.

I wouldn't shoot tonight. Usually people take a .25 reduction if they drop under 50 and you have had low numbers both last night and today. I think Wendy suggested you not shoot and let the depot drain.

That's good you can watch tomorrow. If he starts creeping above 120, post here and we can talk about whether or when he should restart insulin.

Margaret, I know there was some discussion about changing his shot time to 1am/1pm instead of 3am/3pm so you'd be able to get a +2 before you left for work at 3:30am....since you're skipping tonight, IF he's above 120 at 1am tonight, you could change it without having to work back 15 minutes per cycle

But if he's only at about 120 tonight at 1am, please post and let's see how he's been doing before making any suggestions for shooting/not shooting at that time
