Hi,
Though I have two 18 year old female CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease) cats,
Muffy (what a tomboy thumping around the house) & Daisy
(who walks like a delicate princess lol), I noticed some very good diabetic cat
information on Tanya's CKD site on http://www.felinecrf.org/diabetes.htm

I decided to make a commercial canned cat food list of 1% to 2% carbs.
(The best carbohydrate level for Diabetic cats).
Then researched it to make sure they had no Carrageenan.
It took me 2 months detailed research in my spare time.
It's the newest info I could find from Sept 2014 but mainly March 2015.

I narrowed it down to cat foods with 1% to 2%
and NO CARRAGEENAN!
(Also as SOME Diabetic cats have or may have in the future,
renal disease (CKD Chronic Kidney Disease) the phosphorus
levels are VERY low in the 0.60 to 1.5 range
(100mg to 200mg Phosphorus/100kcals).

I sorted out the best canned cat food from the carb & phosphorus data on:
TANYA'S COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE TO FELINE CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE
US CANNED CAT FOOD DATA - Updated 2014 a wonderful site.
http://www.felinecrf.org/canned_food_usa.htm
(Though the data was researched for CKD cats,
it also has all the carbohydrate levels for 95% of canned cat food.)
Then I put it in ALPHABETICAL order for peoples’ convenience.

DIABETIC CAT - SEPT 2014 & 2015
What Is the Best Food for a Diabetic Cat?

http://www.vetstreet.com/our-pet-experts/feeding-the-diabetic-cat
Cats true obligate carnivores & so have very high protein requirement
and an almost nonexistent carbohydrate requirement.
Cats designed to eat foods high in protein, moderate in fat & very low in carbohydrates.
The following composition is ideal:
1) 50% or more calories from animal-based protein
2) 20 - 45% calories from fat
3) 1-2% calories from carbohydrates
4) Rich in water approx. 70% by weight
Because some diabetic cats have or are prone to renal disease also called
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), I have kept the phosphorus levels low.

Low carbs 1% - 2% MOST IMPORTANT NUMBER FOR DIABETIC CATS!
Protein 50% or more from animal protein (not plants..veggies etc.)
Low Phosphorus to 200mg Phos/100kcal (1.55% Dry Matter Analysis (DMA)).
20% - 45% calories from fat
Rich in water 70% by weight (NO DRY CAT FOOD)
http://www.integrativenutritionaltherapies.com/switch-cats-dry-kibble-wet-food-optimal-health/

- Regarding diabetic cat diets
Each brand has very high & very low levels of Carbohydrates.
SO BE SPECIFIC WHEN CHOOSING WITHIN A BRAND!
Buy the exact canned cat for & NOT just the brand name!

Thanks for making this list. I'm sure it will be very helpful to many people. Combing through those food lists for appropriate options can be very time consuming. It's a shame that so many of these foods are fish based (or contain fish). My cat is one of those odd cats whose BG spikes from fish. :(

Thank you very much. I know how time consuming this had to be. My cat is having a tough time as we are trying every kind of food and she just isn't responding well. And her lantus is up to 4.5 units twice a day. This list is really going to help me buy an assortment of canned foods with the very minimum amounts of carbs rather than a box of fancy feast! Thanks again!!!!

So I use this calculator to calculate some of the fancy feast that I use and also ones that I was hoping to try, but again, it shows something completely different than the catinfo site. I get so frustrated with trying to figure things out I just want to cry and give up. My calculation for FF roasted chicken feast came out to 4.8% but the catinfo chart says 12 for carbs. That's a huge difference. Here is what the can says Crude Protein- 11 Fat- 2 Fiber 1.5 Moisture Max- 78 Ash 2.7
What do I believe? The calculator or the catinfo chart? Please help. Thank You!
