he didn't wake me up for his am feeding. I gave him 1/2 ff and he ate it but he is not feeling good. I can tell. His pmps was 530 (I found out he had gotten in the recycling yesterday - only thing in there edible was raw oatmeal flakes which i found on the floor). He pooped a tiny bit (he eats raw ) but his +2.5 after pmps had dropped to 367. Today amps was 334. In the pinks!!!! But he feels like crap. Any thoughts? Heading to the vet

It will take a little time for his trash raid to clear from his system. I hope that is what the vet says. Let us know.

thanks gals! what a scare! Low potassium and really badly dehydrated. I knew he was dehydrated last nt but there wasn't a lot of pee in cat box so he kept it and needed a ton more. There were granules (bones) in the belly which were either the chipmunk from 4 days ago or his felines pride. Anybody heard of this and vet said a lot of his diabetic cats need potassium. Y'all too?

If there were big enough bones in the stomach to see on an x-ray, I'd think chipmunk, not Felines Pride...they grind their bones up pretty well (at least in my experience with them)

I wouldn't say "lots of diabetics need potassium" but only because in the few years I've been here, I've only seen a few of our cats that needed it. I'd think if it was something "lots" of them needed, more of us would be dealing with it

Did he get some fluids while at the vet? Hopefully he's feeling better!

I think he got 3 liters!! Felt awful for hours. Wobbly when we got home from vet. Just now ate a tb of evo with water and metamucil to get the stomach moving. He had gas and lots of food in there. Just tinkled and walked to porch! Haleluyeh!!! Vet tech coming by tonight with antibiotic and anti nausea med just in case. I was a weeping wreck. I noticed mixes of foods of yall's ss. Is that to keep the bowels moving? FF and raw produce very little poop. Ive been dehydrated before and threw up and wobbly so I get it now. I guess the raw oats (I swear less than 1 TB was in the bag and still some on the floor!) did this?? Good news, he's in the yellows today! Thinking I should stick with the 2.75 for another day?

I think the mix of foods is mostly just to get them to eat something more than anything else. When China was eating mostly raw, her poops were small and dry too. That's normal since their body is actually using the majority of the food.

I just recently tried China on RadCat frozen raw because the Natures Variety raw she'd been on changed their formula and she didn't like the new stuff....unfortunately for some reason, it made her blood glucose go up, so until I can find another raw she'll eat, she's eating FF

He's been on the 2.75 dose for 8 cycles now and is still having nadir's in the yellows and pinks...I'd go ahead and increase every 6 cycles until you start seeing some blue

Insulin pushes potassium into the cells, and decreases the amount in the blood. Also, when a cat has blood sugars over the "renal threshold", or about 250-300 and above, the sugar is passed through the urine. This draws water and electrolytes like potassium out of their blood and into their urine with the sugar. Chronically elevated sugars can increase dehydration.

It's really important that you continue to increase as quickly as possible so that you can get him into a more normal range (100s-200s for all readings). As mentioned above, every 6 cycles (3 days), if his blood sugars aren't improving, you should increase.

Keep testing for ketones.

Good explanation! Thank you so much. Ill increase tonight. Like the solid numbers on the syringe anyway cause I know exactly what Im giving him. In response to Chris, Otto will eat anything - food, plastic, you name it so no problem with other foods. He loves the Nature's Variety but Ive been wondering why his levels haven't gone down. I have a ton in the freezer. Hope it doesn't have carbs in it.

No, the Natures Variety is a great food...they just changed the formula (from what I heard at the store I bought it from, they actually started using better ingredients) but for whatever reason, China just doesn't like it.....probably because she's a cat!!

I would also increase by 0.5u tonight. His nadirs are mostly over 300.

Increasing the dose:
  • Hold the dose for 3 - 5 days (6 - 10 consecutive cycles) if nadirs are less than 200 before increasing the dose by 0.25 unit.
    • if your cat is new to numbers under 200, it is recommended to hold the dose for at least 8-10 cycles before increasing.
    • when your cat starts to see nadirs under 100, hold the dose for at least 10 cycles before increasing.
  • After 3 days (6 consecutive cycles)... if nadirs are greater than 200, but less than 300 increase the dose by 0.25 unit.
  • After 3 days (6 consecutive cycles)... if nadirs are greater than 300 increase the dose by 0.5 unit.

You do want to stay on the dose increases and not wait too long on any dose - re-evaluate every 6 cycles. You dropped his dose significantly when you started here and it's possible that he needs more - you don't want him staying in high numbers any longer than necessary to be confident about the dose increases.

Glad you got him to the vet and figured out what was going on. Poor little guy.

He's had 1 yellow recently - do I go up by .25 or .50?
An anonymous llama just showed up at the top of my ss - what is that?

I'd go for the 0.5 increase just because you had lowered significantly, and it's pretty important to get him out of the high sugars. Julie, just to remind, I think they are using the Alphatrak, so the scale is going to be different for the protocol. Does anyone have the numbers for this meter with the TR protocol?

what a great team! Thanks. Going up by .50. Gave him 3u last night cause I had to do go ahead. So this am it was 3.25. Still no poop but he's still eating. Vet says enema.

You might want to start a new thread (condo) next time you post. This one is getting a little long. Usually we encourage people to start a new one every day so that things remain manageable.

Hope you've had a good day. Sending Poo Vines to mr. Otto. I hope he goes without having to have the enema, poor little guy!
