Am I doing the correct thing starting a new daily thread?

Yesterday
AMPS. 379
+3. 401
+6. 374
+9. 367
PMPS. 352
+3. 316
+5. 235
+6. 228
+8. 183
AMPS. 208

I am so happy to see such a good AMPS for Sheba:cat:.
After the higher numbers yesterday morning, I didn't have to give any higher carb food as she came down the scale last night. It was a very gentle drop for her.
My homework today is to continue reading all those great threads you posted for me yesterday.
Thanks everyone. :)

Yes...we start a new thread every day (We call them "condos"...for "condition report" or the places cats live)

The other thing you'll want to do is to put the link to the prior day's condo in the current one so it's easy for people to quickly go back and see what's been said in the past few days. Here's your New to Lantus/Levemir condo

Is it already 3/8 where you are?

Didn't get a chance yesterday, but want to Welcome you and Sheba (back) to the best place you never wanted to be! Not a bad AMPS at all!!

Hoping Sheba can make it back to the falls again!

Hey Bron

Yes...it's right except in the subject line, we need Sheba's name before "AMPS" so we know which kitty it is :):)

Let's see how she does today. She's been on this dose a while and only gotten a little green. If she doesn't come back down into green today, I think we should think about a dose increase.

Thanks Chris. I hope she makes it back to the falls too!
Yes it is Sunday morning just after 9am here in Sydney.
Can you tell me how to link yesterday's condo please? I am a bit of a computer dummy at times
Thanks Bron

The simple way is to just "copy" the link from the address bar and then "paste" it here!

If you want to make it "pretty", you just say what you want to (Like I usually just go with "Yesterday's condo") and then "highlight" the words (like you would if you were going to copy/paste.) Once they're highlighted, click on the little icon along the top that looks like a link in a chain. A new little box pops up and you put the link in there

Hi Marje,
Have changed the title. Thanks for the tip off!
I have told Sheba I want to see green today! :DWill you tell me later today what I have to do with the dose?
Thanks Bron

Thanks Chris . I will try that tomorrow. Bron

Hello again Bron - lovely sunny AMPS for Sheba today. :) I think that if you don't see green today, take her up to at least 6.5 units. The reason I say "at least" is that increases on doses over 5 units are usually done in .5U increments. However, she did see a nice green so maybe just sneak the dose up a bit. Then it'll be back on the line. ;) Sometimes if you add a little insulin and increase the carbs a bit to compensate, you can get a flatter cycle.

Hi Wendy and Neko,

OK, I will increase if I see no green today.
She responds really well to small increases. I shudder when I think in the beginning I used to increase by I unit at a time (as per vet instructions). So I will be happy to just go up to 6.5. I can't buy the syringes with the half unit markings out here in Aus. so just have to get out my magnifying glass, which sits with the syringes and judge it. It has worked so far OK.
I see Neko is finding sunbeams to lie in:cat: . I put Sheba's basket in the sun yesterday morning and she eagerly jumped into it, but 20 minutes later she had to move out of the sun as it was too hot! Wish I could send some to Neko in a bottle!

Being in the same boat as you with the syringes, I find it useful to keep a sample syringe of the current dose handy. I color some water and spend a bit of time getting the sample syringe just right. I then find it much faster to draw up doses as I just need to compare them to the sample syringe rather than sweat over them too much. It also helps me to be more consistent between doses.

Nice AMPS, so close to blue!

Thanks Serryn. That is a great tip. I will do it this afternoon. It will be good for in the mornings especially as I am always only half awake when I draw up the insulin and my eyes are still trying to focus . I find if I don't get the dose right straight away, it seems to take ages to get it right. And it always happens when time is short!

What monitor do you use? And do you get your test strips off the internet? I find the price in the shops for strips is huge. I have been getting my strips from ebay at less than half the price, but still too much.

I've got an optium exceed for Vyktor (changed from the Freestyle Lite as it was reading lower than it should in high numbers) which can also test for ketones. Purrdy (who I'm babysitting) has an accucheck Performa which I'm really liking. The same tiny bit of blood as for the Freestyle Lite but seems to be more accurate.

I have always bought my strips from the chemist - huge variation in price between chemists so I shop around but at about $50/100 they are hideously expensive. The price is bumped up to allow for the humans with their diabetic cards to get a discount, I think they only pay about $15! I will have to get mum onto eBay to get hers as she is getting rather concerned about the mounting costs. I've never bought anything from eBay so was a little worried to try but if you're having success that way we will give it a go. Would you please provide the link for me? She did score recently because a diabetic friend of hers who uses the same meter had some that were nearing expiry so she got 100 strips for free!

I use the abbott freestyle optium monitor and it uses the same test strips as the Xceed. I used to have an Xceed but I dropped it and broke it. I googled both yours and your mums strips and they are available from about 27.00 a box of 100. I usually buy multiple boxes at a time as they are often cheaper that way. It is quite safe to buy on eBay but I would always pay with PayPal as you are safeguarded if something goes wrong. If you have not used PayPal before it will walk you through the steps. You just have to have your bank card ready. The next time you will just have to use your password and it automatically remembers everything so you don't have to get your bank card out every time. When you get into the site there are many to choose from. Click on one and it will give you details. I always buy from an australian source but there are ones from India and Indonesia etc. they are just as cheap from Aus. Look at the price AND if the postage is FREE. Many offer free postage. Others have a lower price but added postage. You will want to have a good look before you buy as there are a lot to choose from. You shouldn't need to pay more than 30.00 max including postage. I got one lot for 23.00 a box of 100 once. There are bargins to be had. They usually put the expiry date on the details. I use them pretty quickly so a long expiry is not necessary for me. Also check they are a 100 box not a 50 box. Also they are not the ketone test strips... They will appear as well. My test strip box Freestyle Optium says the strips are used for freestyle optium Neo, freestyle optium, optium xceed, optium and truesense.
So...........go into Google and type in ' abbott optium Xceed blood glucose test strips 100'........(you may get more options if you just type in optium...not Xceed...... they use the same strips). Once you click in to a product it will give details...scroll down and there should be more details about that particular product. Also you should see more of the same to choose from in that page. So there are the ones listed on the first page of ebay that you go into, and there are a lot more once you go into a particular buyer site. I hope that makes sense. If you are unsure if you should buy or are worried, PM me.
Do the same for your Mums ones.......put in 'accu check performa test strips.' I can see ones for 28.00 free postage from qland 100 in a box.
Good luck. Let me know how it goes.:)

Sheba's PMPS was 198. I gave an increase as advised to 6.50 units. Gulp! I have never given an increase with such a low number and I am feeling very nervous!:nailbiting::nailbiting::nailbiting:mainly because I know how she dives when she is on a mission.

I have to go out over the nadir tomorrow afternoon for about 2 hours and would be grateful for advice as to how to handle it if she is dropping low when I am due to leave. Would it be a good idea to give higher carbs to stop her going too low. Of course she may not even go low but it would be good to have a plan just in case. Can't take her with me as it is too hot to leave her in the car even for half an hour while I am actually collecting kids at the school.
Thanks. Sorry I am being a scaredy cat. :(

Better be scared than sorry! You will want to leave her with access to food if she's low or looking like going there. If you don't have a timed feeder you might want to freeze some food tonight so you can leave it out frozen to defrost in time release fashion for her. If you have other critters you'll need to work out somewhere separate you can put her to make sure she's the one that gets the food if she needs it.

My mum was wrapped to hear she can get the strips for half the price :)

Thanks Serryn. I forgot about the timed feeder!! I use it every night but I completely forgot when I was thinking about tomorrow. I got a bit frazzled because I don't usually pick up on Monday so I thought I would have a day to see how she went on the increased dose. Then my daughter rang to see if I could do the pick up tomorrow. I can't just leave food out as she eats everything in sight. But the timed feeder is the answer. Thank you!

I am glad your Mum is pleased about the strips.
Did you know there is an animal pharmacy here in Sydney where you can get prescription and non prescription drugs for animals much cheaper than at the vets. For example the medication I give Sheba for her BP and kidneys is 150.00 at the vet but 75.00 for 40 tablets at this place. That is over 1000.00 a year just for one med if paying full price at the vet. I have to get a script from the vet for it. Can't get narcotics though there. I'll send the info if you are interested. They are online and post items to you. It is close to one of the kids schools so I can collect things on the way to the school when I need them
