I tested Katya (17.5 intial BG at vet 400, diagnosed 10 days ago) this morning but with a different meter. I bought a ReliOn Confirm (other is a Prime). I tested both of them on me and the Confirm reads higher than the Prime. The Confirm requires less blood (.03). So tested her with the Confirm and it was 142. She had grazed some within the previous two hours. At the vets last Wed it was 196. Anyway she gets dehydrated and also has the neuropathy thing going on so I had asked the vet for Sub Qs and B12. I had a cat with CRF, so I have given Subs before. My main question was that there is a port on the line and rather than sticking her with the B12, could I add it to fluids? Also where can you get the sticks to test ketones?? TY

Hi Keni,

Can't help with the B12 and sub-q question, but you should be able to pick up KetoDiastix or similar at any pharmacy. Just ask for urine ketone test strips. They're the same ones that humans use.

I am not sure. I don't think that I have ever seen Methyl B12 in a liquid form that could be added to the fluids. The only B12 that I have added to fluids is Cyanocobalamin and that does not work for neuropathy.

TY your for the replies guys. The vet sold me 6 syringes of the B12, so I just shot it into the port when I gave her some fluids. I just hope it is as effective. Tested Katya again this morning BG 108, I'm on cloud nine. Could she have been misdiagnosed or am I missing something? She still has the weakness in her hind legs and twitching in the front.

Okay, well Larry I checked out your links and your right the methyl is way more expensive than the one I got. I'm going to talk to my vet and get the methyl one since the other supposedly contains cyanide and doesn't bond as well. What do you guys think is going on with the BG numbers for Katya

Are you testing blood glucose levels at home? If so can you list them all out.

From your previous post you said you hasn't started insulin yet and her blood glucose reading was significantly lower than at the vets. 142 isn't a bad reading as you said it was two hours after eating and therefore that possibly influenced the number a little still.

If she still isn't on insulin then I would recommend you take her readings either before her breakfast or before her evening meal each day for the week to get some baseline levels. You may also want to test three hours after she ate to see how her pancreas responds.

Thank you for the advice phlika29. I am hesitant to start the insulin until I get an average. Her reading at 11am was 108. Something doesn't add up, except I also gave her sub q fluids yesterday (100ml) and I was just reading online that dehydration and diabetes can affect each other. What a strange disease this is. It reminds me of the codes on a vehicle where the car's computer adjust for a fault which actually masks other problems down the road. Too bad there is not an OBD reader for body codes.

Yes I agree you should continue to take readings over the next couple of days.

Try to get a pre food reading and then one three hours after food.

In the meantime you should be checking for ketones in the urine. Do you have any ketostix ?

This is a very good idea. I would add, though, that it would be valuable if you could find a time where you can feed, then check BG at +1, +2 and +3 after the meal. My reasoning is that the interim tests will give you a better picture of how Katya's body responds to incoming dietary carbs. +3 might be too late after the meal to throw light on how her blood glucose regulation is working/not working.
