Young Again zero carb dry cat food

Hi all

I ordered some samples of this food for my cats (my 14.5yr old male Salem was recently diagnosed with diabetes resulting from a shot of Depo for a lip sore)...so I thought I'd see if they liked this food before ordering a bag. They loved it. I'm going to order a bag today. This will supplement the FF canned food as they always had dry food since being babies and I feel they're missing it in their diet. I'm fine with its zero carbs. Has any other people here tried? How had it worked w/their diabetic cat? we are supposed to start Salem on Lantus this week but I'm wondering if I should hold off & see how this change in diet works. Any comments/ advice would be greatly appreciated.

Young Again 0 Carb is actually 5% calories from carbohydrates as we calculate it. Pop over to Cat Info to learn more about feline nutrition.
Did he have any ketones? If there were ketones, do not hold off on starting insulin. And start at a low dose - 0.5 to 1.0 units, every 12 hours is reasonable.
 
Well its still a good low carb dry food for them, right? I don't know if he had ketones. I'm looking at the lab results from Jan and shows ketones, negative..but that could've changed. How do I test that at home? he's acting fine, not sick at all.. I'm curious as to how much insulin the vet will say he needs. I know he'll need twice a day, I'll know when I pick up the script. I will test his GL before the insulin w/the new meter. I have an apptmt tmrw nite w/vet tech to do first shot and I'll have them recheck his level w/their meter & my new one so I know the difference.
 
Its OK, if your cat won't eat wet food. Otherwise, we suggest only canned, low carb food.

To test for ketones in urine, get KetoStix or KetoDiaStix (which also show urine glucose) from a pharmacy or online. See my signature link Secondary Monitoring Tools for some tips on this.

No need to take your glucometer in for comparison. We have cat-specific reference numbers for human glucometers, as human meters read 30-40% lower than pet meters or pet lab equipment.

ok, but when I brought in my Tru2Go meter last week, it read 232 and vets meter said 466..thats a lot more than 20-30% or is it because that Tru2Go meter is just junk? My cats both at the FF without a problem. They always had dry kibble their whole lives. I just thought Young Again would be a nice treat once in a while to give them in btwn the canned foods as long as its low carb or zero carb I thought better than giving anything else dry..
 
yes... if it's necessary to give dry..... go with the young again..... there are only two dry's that are okay. Young again zero carb..... and wysong epigen 90

but ultimately that dry food can lead to ckd ..... whether diabetes is in the picture or not.
the kidney is the cat's weakest organ.

so we will always wish for kitties to have nothing but wet food.... anything to get liquids in....

dry food was only invented approximately 100 years ago....
cats mostly had to fend for themselves..... mice in the barn.....

just like with human foods, convenience and pre-packaged has taken over our lives..... and it's better for all of us to avoid all that processed stuff....
 
I will keep you posted on how insulin goes..hoping for the best and that he won't need to be on it too long.
 
Meters with Tru in the name tend not to measure cats well at high numbers, leading you to think your cat is improving.
 
We took the Relion meter to vets tonite as we had apptmt w vet to show us how tobdo insulin shot & I figured get an accurate read while there. The Relion meter was only 20 points lower than Alphatrak2 so I feel better about that.

What were the numbers and were they from the same blood drop?
 
399 on Relion and 418 on vets meter. Yes from same blood drop. How soon does Lantus insulin kick in?
 
There is often a food spike within 2 hours of the meal given at shot time, then a gradual decline for 5-7 hours and a gradual rise after that.
