Good Morning--COLD Morning here! The "official" temperature in Saranac Lake was -26 (but it was only -15 at our house). Rusty snuggled between his beans, and we had to put a blanket on top of the down comforter! He ate all of his nighttime food and has eaten most of his breakfast so far (FF T&G and Wellness Core turkey & duck). I'm still looking around at foods and finding websites that deal with pet food safety and ingredients. I can see that this is a Pandora's Box, but it's hard to break away!

Rusty's breathing/congestion is not great today. But I just heard him sneeze a big sneeze, so perhaps he got out some of the gunk. It is very dry in the house because the furnace is working a lot just to keep the house at 64 degrees (and we have hot-water heat, which keeps the radiators warm and allows the furnace to "rest").

Winter Carnival kicks off today. The "Groovy '60s". I no longer have my bright green bell-bottom pants that I used to wear with a flowered cowboy shirt. I'll try to get some photos of the Ice Palace if it warms up enough for the camera!

Wishing all a good day. TGIF!

Good morning Ella- Wow that sounds way too cold to get out of bed! Sorry to hear Rusty still has the congestion- I started to wonder if he inhaled something irritating to his sinus, but then I remembered you have radiators not forced air heaters...Hope he feels better and the good appy remains! :bighug:

I found this website last night while researching new foods: Animal Nature Nutrition and Supplies I was wondering if you have heard of any of these lines? I recognize Rad Cat and Weruva and Wysong of course, but even more interesting to me was the foods lines that they do not carry and why  BTW, I see that I managed to hotlink this whole paragraph and I don't have time to figure out what the heck I did, sorry!

Enjoy the Winter Carnival today- stay warm and hope you can take pics! My older sisters both had the bell bottomed pants and one is such a horder, I bet she still has them! :p:p Peace Out! :D:D

@Tiger and Ruth : Hi Ruth, Thanks so much for citing that website. Lots of interesting stuff there. I became intrigued with Rad Cat raw food. It sounds great. I may try to get some the next time we go to the city, or to Burlington VT. Have you tried it?

It's been snowing all day, so I think we'll go to see the Ice Palace tomorrow. It's really cold and raw outside.

btw, Rusty has chronic congestion, this is a flare-up that he is having at the moment. He's had it ever since we adopted him. I'm wondering if Rad Cat might help. Some of the testimonials cited their cat's coughing, sneezing, and even asthma as clearing up after eating Rad Cat.

Scritches for Tiger

I had been looking for RadCat for months and finally had one of the boutique pet stores in Columbia, Mo start to carry it, so when China's supply of Natures Variety Frozen was running out, I was happy to be able to finally get it!

She really loves it...better than she liked the NV! The one thing that's kind of a pain is that if you buy it in the most economical size, you either have to feed it to several cats (to use it in time) or what I've been trying is defrosting it in the refrigerator just long enough to be able to hack off some and put into smaller containers...and then put the part that's still frozen solid back in the freezer.

The only "bad" part is that China's numbers have been crazy high since she went on the RC only diet which makes no sense at all since it's only 3% carbs...Not sure if it's got anything to do with the RadCat or if China's just being a snot

There's absolutely nothing but good stuff in it, so I can see how cats who might have trouble with allergies (especially to chemicals/hormones/etc) would do really well on it.

That really sounds like TOO cold to me!! Glad you're going to wait and hope the weather is better tomorrow for your trip to see the Ice Palace!

Hi Ella. Hope you are all staying warm. That Winter Carnival sounds so interesting and fun, but not at those temps!

I'm glad to see the Lagoonmeister is on duty. Cinco is surfing today and I always feel better when Rusty is there to keep an eye on him!

Marje has been feeding Gracie Rad Cat. She suspects it might be spiking LBG's numbers. You might check with her.

If you do dress in 60s attire, we will expect pics! :p

@Chris & China ; @Tricia & Cinco : Interesting about the higher numbers. That will be something to consider once I get some Rad Cat and am able to try it on Rusty. What is it's consistency? Is it a paté? I ask because Rusty only has 5 teeth and doesn't do well with food that is chunks or shreds.

:p Nope, I don't have any 60s garb anymore. Maybe I can scan an old photo on my printer. I wouldn't mind--too much--about posting an old picture (everyone here knows I'm camera-shy when it comes to the Internet).

The lagoon is a lot warmer than outside at your place. Brrr! Bummer on Rusty's congestion acting up. The raw diets do help a lot with different types of allergies. And you can get single proteins as well as usual ones. Just don't try the most expensive ones first, that's the ones the cats will decide they prefer!

I am looking forward to the pics of the Ice Palace again. I imagine it's rather quiet there today in those temps.

It's not a pate, but it's not chunks or shreds either....think "ground chicken"

I'll see if I can get a picture of it for you if that would help

Oh Rusty, nice day at the Lagoon. Probably a lot warmer there, too. Hope the warm humid atmosphere there helps with your congestion!

Enjoy the carnival. Green bell bottoms with a cowboy shirt. Hmmm? I pretty much spent the 60s in jeans and sweatshirts. Sorta like I do now!

Ella, I just woke the dog with MY howling....at your subject line's PMSSSSSS. I live in one and I still think it's dessert!

And now I've got an awake dog. Gee, thanks!

About to break out the ice bottles here :) good to see Rustys been on duty :DI thought all those extra sssssssses might be a stutter you've developed from the cold!

the pieces are really pretty small...that's a small bowl (not even "cereal size") so I think he may be able to handle it. Every once in awhile I'll see a little bigger chunk, but mostly, it's pretty well ground up

Lots of good info here. I did give Gracie a tiny bit of Rad Cat and she loved it but just as with all the raw foods I've given her and even Feline Natural (which I really like), she barfed it up. I think the raw foods are just too rich for her. The only downside I saw to the Rad Cat was what Chris mentioned. Unlike some of the other raw foods, it just comes as a containter (there are three sizes but not all stores carry the small ones) of raw food. You have to thaw it just enough to divide it into portion sizes and then refreeze it.

I've been feeding Tobey Primal raw and he loves it and so do I. Of course, it made Gracie barf. The venison is 6% carbs which is good; the turkey and pheasant are lower. There is also beef/salmon and chicken/salmon but Tobey won't eat those as he's never had fish. Tobey loves the venison, turkey, and rabbit (which I only let him have a small amount every other day because it is very high in P). The Primal comes in 1 oz chunks that are about 45 calories a chunk, depending on the meat, or you can buy the turkey, rabbit, beef/salmon, and chicken/salmon in Primal Pronto which are very small pieces that thaw quickly. You can easily weigh out the amount needed.

Hoping that Gracie might be able to eat a freeze-dried raw, I ordered a small pkg of Feline Natural. It is very low in carbs (0-1%). You have to add water to rehydrate it. Tobey and Gracie both went right for it but Gracie threw it up. Tobey loves it and I give him that as well just to vary his raw diet.

Any changes should be made slowly as raw food is richer than canned. When I was giving Gracie some of these raws, I was giving her about 1/4 tsp and even that made her vomit but that is just her. I started Tobey's transition the same way and he never had an issue with the raws and, in fact, it has made his poos sooooooooo much better as canned food (I think it was the carregeenan) was causing him to have intermittent soft stools.

I hope that also gives ou other info to think about. You are definitely correct about the difficulty in finding quality foods for diabetic cats. I really wish I could Gracie on a raw food; I'm giving her probiotics to see if that might help eventually.

@Marje and Gracie
Hi Marje, Thank you for all this info. I'm going to look into the frozen raw foods next month, in the city. When you feed Tobey raw food do you give him a full portion (ca. 3 oz.) twice a day? That's what Rad Cat thinks is the proper feeding method for raw food (because cats in the wild eat all their prey when they kill it, or they might lose it to another predator). They say that cats did not evolve to graze. Now, Rusty is a grazer (with only 5 teeth). And here on the board we agree that diabetic cats need many smaller meals spread out over the day in order to not overload the pancreas. It's a conundrum.

Tobey gets 4 chunks of Primal a day. Just as when Gracie was not diabetic (she actually ate the NV medallions back then but just stopped before she was dx), I feed Tobey by giving him a chunk when I feed Gracie and then I let him tell me when he wants more. He seems to space it out so he eats 2 chunks between 7 a.m. and about 1 p.m. and 7 pm and midnight. Some days, he's wants more of it at one time. Some days, less. But he always eats thst first whole chunk at Gracies PS.
