My vet just called. Poor Max. He had three extractions and has stitches that will dissolve. I can pick him up in a little over an hour and he will come home with bupe. I did agree to an antibiotic shot vs pills since his mouth will be pretty sore. I've been thinking about it all morning but didn't expect he would need this much work done. I hope I did the right thing. This will be the second time he has had it. Wish us luck.

He may surprise you, especially since he already loves to eat. A couple years ago my civvie Petey had 2 extractions and was ready to eat the second he got home.

Sending quick recovery vines for Max. I think he'll be hungry. MC had 10 teeth removed and wanted to eat when she got home. Don't let him eat a lot at once or it may upset his tummy since he had anesthesia.

Do you have any baby food in the house? If Max doesn't feel like regular food, baby food may be easier for him to eat. I hope he's back to normal quickly.

Good to hear it's over and Max did well!!

China had 8 extractions and was ready to eat when she came home, so he may surprise you!

Sending some quick recovery vines for Max

Max...don't forget the toof fairy owes you!!

I gave Max a big spoonful of baby food and he ate it. I'll feed him a little at a time at first. My vet said he checked his BG just before I got there and it was 354 so I don't think he will be going into remission like my vet felt he might. It will be interesting to see how long it takes him to get back on track and if the extractions help at all. He gave me 8 doses of 1ml of buprenex to give every 12 hours. For now he is starving. My vet said he had to have been in quite a bit of pain before and might not be in much more now. Let's hope so.

Thanks for the visits Chris, Liz, Carla, Sienne, Darin, and Catherine.

Tons of healing vines going down for Max. Do you know which teeth were extracted? Some they notice more than others. Good to hear he's still got appy. :)

I went with liquid ABs for Neko after the dental, cause I thought the same as you that I didn't want to get pills down her. Max may have a bit of inflammation for a few days. I noticed Neko's numbers went up a bit temporarily after her extraction.

Give Max some scritches from me, he did good today. This is for you - the wait is always hard. :bighug:

Thanks Wendy. One of the teeth says PM/M 1 Root. The other two aren't listed because he didn't charge me I guess. They were smaller teeth that had broken off he said. He needed stitches for the PM/M. I need to make an appointment in two weeks to recheck. I still have to give him his BP gel cap each morning. Hopefully that won't be a problem. It shouldn't be but the thought of twice a day with a sore mouth just didn't set well with me. Of course I'm having second thoughts though about the convenia.:arghh:

I'm glad he's up for eating!! It is way too early to think he may not go into a post-dental remission....maybe he won't go into remission, but he does need to get through recovery first - and maybe once he recovers he will go into remission. Given all the events of today, it's no surprise that his BG is on the high side, so today really doesn't count. You never know...and since it took Trix over 3 years to go into remission, I can honestly say, never rule it out!

True, Amy. My vet thought because his numbers were so good and he didn't have glucose in his urine that he might be going into remission now. That's why he wanted me to drop his dose by more than a unit. I disagreed with him. Unfortunately I was right. I doubt he will be suggesting dosing with me again soon. He told me I could make a career of it.

hehehe you *have* kind of made a career of it! Max's BGs are so amazing because you've done the hard work!

so glad Max is done with the dental - and really, i wouldn't be surprised if all of those bad teeth played a part in how difficult he's been to regulated. i hope he heals well and things go smoothly. punkin had many teeth removed - i don't even know now - i want to say he had 3 out with the first dental and his 2 fangs out with the second one.

good grief. first Anya and now Frodo are between me and the screen. hahahaha it must be 5pm and time for their dinner.

in any case, i hope max does fine eating and does well with the Convenia. Fingers crossed for you guys. Did your mom get that new AB today? it's hard getting old.

sending you relaxing vines, elise! :bighug:

Thanks Julie. My mom refused to go see her doctor today. It's a catch 22. We can't force her and if she duesbt go she could wind up in the hospital. The irologust got the C&S but he Csm find it on his computer and hopefully will change the antibiotic tonight. He will be in the office tomorrow to if she changes her mind and would fit her in.

Sending Max some healing vines for a speedy recovery! I agree..Its a bit early to speculate on remission. His numbers could just be from the stress and discomfort today. give it some time. I also am curious as to how your mom is doing. At least now you have the dental behind you and hopefully relax a bit tonight. Paws crossed for Max to get back on track quickly!

Thanks, Laura. Max ate about 3/4 a jar of baby food when we got home. Then he settled down for real and is under my bed. My vet said if he eats to give him his regular dose but if he isn't eating well to give 1/2. What would you consider eating enough? He might eat after I yank him out to test in about 45 minutes but he might not.

a lot of people skip the post-dental shot because many cats drop after the pm shot. i'd think eating 1/2 as much as normal is probably "enough", with the expectation that he would be interested in eating later, of course, if you want to shoot "some."

I think i'd err on the side of too-little insulin tonight, though, rather than go gung-ho back into his regular dose/routine.

Did you do a test when you got Max home? I used the trend from Neko's back in the house test to PS to determine what to do. She was going up, and eating well, so I was OK with full dose. I also had Neko's BG tests from the vet, but she doesn't get a BG rise from going to the vet. I agree with Julie - I'd make sure he's eaten at least 1/2 his meal.

Thanks, Julie. Since I skipped this morning unless he eats willingly at the next test I think I will give him a half dose. Max often eats a little at pmps and then gets hungry once the insulin kicks in. Still, I don't mind a quiet night and no chance of a pj party since I didn't sleep well last night.

Just saw your post Wendy. I didn't test him when I got home. Last week he was the same at home as he was at the vet's office. The vet tested him right before I saw him and I'm just 10 minutes away from there unless it's Friday or evening traffic.. I decided to let Max calm down and eat. He was a little vocal when we got home. He didn't clean his plate with the last spoon of baby food and went under my bed. I just checked on him and he didn't give me much of a response. I'll test him in about 15 minutes and go from there.

No dosing advice, just had to send tons and tons of healing vines for Max, please hug him for Tiger and I--and this is for you Elise- :bighug: What a stressful day for you- prayers for your mom too- I bet she is so sick of feeling poorly. Hope Max and you have a restful evening- with Bupe on board Tiger almost fell asleep in her LB!

Hi Elise,
Max will surely feel better without the bad teeth. Baby food is good and easy on the gums. Rusty has 5 teeth left and at one point (before we adopted him) had about 10 extracted at the same time.
KTSS will be along later with a healing catmint cooler for Max's sore gums and a spa treatment for vetty smell.

Have a good evening with your kitty.
Vines for Max, and vines for your DM,

Ella & Rusty

Thanks Ruth. We will see how the bupe effects him. I'm only to give 1 ml. I think with pancreatitis I was given 3ml doses but gave him 2 so this should be interesting. So far he has ignored the food I put out after his test so I am leaning toward giving him a 1/2 dose.

The vetty smell comment made me think of how Tiffany and Max would hiss at each other when they came back from the vet. I miss her.

Elise, so glad Max did so well through the dental. Those nasty teeth are much better gone. It will be interesting to see what happens with him once he's through the recovery stage.

Just hugs for you. Breathe again. And vines for Max to recovery quickly. Lots of light for your mom, toori.

Marilyn and Polly

I'm sorry he had to have so many extractions but now he will feel much better and paws crossed his dose will come down.

Glad he's eating the baby food. Maybe you can both get some sleep tonight.

Tobey is coming to give w massage as part of the KTSS.

Thanks Julie, Marilyn, and Marje. He's still turning away from cat food but I opened a jar of Gerbers and he ate it from under the bed.

Hi Elise and Max! I'm so glad his dental went well, but sorry that he needed some extractions.

I was super nervous when Billie got the Convenia shot for her hives over the summer, but it went well. I gave her Fortiflora to go along with it (and I am still giving her Fortiflora because she got addicted!) If Max didn't have any bad reactions last time he got it, he should be totally fine too.

Sending lots of speedy recovery vines to Max.

Thanks, Deanna.I just dragged him out from under the bed and gave him some bupe and baby food. I just checked and he ate it but is back under my bed.

Poor Max! What a traumatic day. Sounds like he came through like a trooper, but I'm sure he's out of sorts. Cats are such creature of routine. I'll be anxious to see how he does once he's healed and over the disruption to his schedule. I wish we could explain to them that this is for their own good and they will feel better eventually!

Sending tons of healing vines for Max, restful vines for you, and prayers and vines for your DM. :bighug:

Yay for a good dental :) he might be feeling a little stoned from his pain meds so hiding out because of that. As long as he's eating all is well

I bring my special patent gum leaf likor for you Max, delivery straight to under de bed. Itz de best for gettin off dat Vetty smell, and for rinsin de mouf, and for pain and for sleepin and especially for gettin drunk. I bring it after de bean goes to bed :woot: Vyktor

Thanks for the visits Tricia and Serryn. He definitely doesn't like the slightest change in his schedule.
