I don't know where to start.

- his BG has been HI all day. Never seen that before and he hasn't eaten anything except LC treats since 8pm last night. No ketones yet. See SS
- He wasn't eating well yesterday and worse today. Only thing he will touch is LC treats and thats useless as I can't put the EPI enzymes on them.
- His eye infection (started when in Florida end of 2014 but went away) back worse the last few days and both eyes have pale yellow pus.
- He is acting miserable, lethargic and squinty eyes
- He is drinking and peeing a ton. May be dehydrated - yesterday I even saw him stagger a little

Anyway I don’t know if its the methimazole causing the high blood glucose, or if its a factor of not getting insulin for two weeks while we were away. And/or the eye infection.

FYI While we were away because of his tendency to drop low, I directed the pet sitter to only shoot him if he was over a certain level and after a few days she wasn’t shooting him at all. I almost wondered if he was going into remission but I come back and he has lost a pound of weight and is down to 4lbs. Also he wasn’t getting any diabetic dry crunchy topping when we were away. Anyway as soon as we came back / restart the dry his BG shoots up but at the same time he regains a little weight and maintains it. But now this.

I am testing every hour, giving him tons of water, checking for ketones and we head to the vet in 2 hours. But I know they won't know how to handle the diabetes. I am holding off any dry and will worry about weight loss later but I am very very concerned. I have seen these numbers in a sheet before and it wasn't good.

I was reading about the side effects of methimazole and one is loss of appetite because of the bitterness, and one is that they can develop leucopenia, that makes them succeptible for other disease as it lower their immunity. After 6 months on it 50% of cats develop an autoimmune disease. Maybe this is the problem? Im not knowledgeable, I just googled the drug..good luck at the vet
 
Its not bitterness. the Methimazole is through ear gel. And he has only been on it less than two weeks. I am so worried something else is going on.. I have seen quite a few cats on here go out of control in the final days of their lives.
 
:bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug: Sending good vetty and good eating vines. I think the important thing is to get him eating again. Ask the vet for appy stimulant and anti nausea meds.
 
Wendy, do you have any experience using Regular insulin as an adjunct to your normal insulin? It may be that a bolus of R will bring down the glucose enough that the Lantus can work, while you are dealing with whatever has boosted the glucose levels. I'm thinking infection of some sort.
 
They are hospitalizing him over the weekend. He is very dehydrated and was constipated but he did poop in the car and in the vet (and then threw up) so I am thinking the constipation causing the high BG. But he is dangerously dehydrated so they will be having him on a drip all weekend plus giving insulin if needed.

Please pray for him....
 
Sending good thoughts Bailey's way. I'm wondering if it's the eye infection that is more the problem and effecting his numbers. Any infection or inflammation can raise BG numbers. Unless he was vomiting, is if possible he was running a fever and that was causing the dehydration?

This is the first he has vomited. And hyperthyroidism causes some cats to run a low grade fever. She didn't measure his temp cos his ass was sore from the poop in the car but I am hoping they will do it soon.

Come on little guy... how about another rally now after all you have been through.

Hopefully they can get food (w/enzymes?) in the mix along with hydration, insulin, and infection control.
 
Absolutely! They can't feed him without it!
Am nervously waiting on bloodwork. Although we had it done a month ago I worry there is something else now... Hate the waiting...
 
Ok so his bloodwork was fine asides from his dehydration affecting his kidney values and the high BG which was too high for their Meter to read ie over 700. However they gave him R and he dropped to 600 in an hour and they are contuining to watch. They are taking to slow as he isn't throwing ketones plus they know he is a microdose cat. They said also his heart has a galloping ryhthym but they think that's hydration too. Anyway they are keeping him 24hours for now and we will see.. Oh and no pancreatitis according to the bloodwork.
 
Wendy.........Harley, Davidson and I are sending tons of strength your way for Bailey!! Hopefully after he gets hydrated he will stabilize and come home. Our thoughts are with you!!!

Keep in mind that unless they did a Snap fPL, they can't rule out pancreatitis if they are basing their conclusion on lipase levels.

We sure hope that the vets will be able to stabilize Tiggy today and that he will rally and begin to heal. Lots of vines on the way.

Good morning and thanks everyone for the support.

So he is doing a bit better. Overnight he ate twice, pooped and drank water. With help of the R he dropped to 335 and so then they switched to his normal Lantus and are continuing to watch. He is still dehydrated so they are continuing to push fluids and I will get another update later today.

They did a Snap fPL.

This is just so stressful for you.

All our fingers and 3 sets of paws crossed for continued improvement in Bailey's condition.
 
Ok he is looking better all the time. Still eating and pooping although still dehydrated so they are keeping him overnight again. They did a curve today and its in the SS but he dropped to 214 so not looking too bad. Tonight they are dropping him back to 0.25 because they do know he is a microdose cat and want to play it safe. Its nice to see not bad numbers too! They are also treating his eye infection.:)

Keep on getting better and better Bailey. We know your mommbean Wendy misses you and will be so glad when you get to come home from the vetty.
 
you might want to update the subject line to reflect that - i know people worry when a cat isn't doing well and we could all use a little celebration that Bailey's getting better!
 
So he is home and seems happy. Now I have to get his BG under control. I am thinking 0.5 units isn't cutting it but will give him 6 cycles before taking him to 0.75 (unless I see blue or green) thoughts?
 
Your previous dose of 0.25 wasn't really getting him below 150 mg/dL on a human glucometer. I'd be inclined to go to the 0.5 now, rather than risk ketones, dehydration from the excessive urination due to high glucose, and so on.
 
You mean go to 0.75? He is on 0.5 already although he got 0.25 last night. Its a bit of a mess. I did try 0.5 on him before but that was earlier in the week before this all happened.
 
Those numbers are painful. The reason I could see to hold the 0.5u is that his ugly numbers may be a response to being stressed at the vet.
