New Diagnosis, I'm massacring my kitty's ears and need bg curve advice

She has her normal am feeding now- the other kitties are there but she's still hiding (under the bed). I am waiting to see if she will come out with the rest of the crowd, before syringe feeding. but she probably isn't going to want to eat after a night of being hunted, pricked and force fed. Obviously I skip her am insulin dose.

I've got to crash at this point, Martha, the sleep disorder is kicking my butt.
You want 3 rising tests about 30 minutes apart, and adding in some of the low carb will help keep it sustained.
Because of how low she went, she may bounce, that is, have unusually high numbers due to compensatory protective hormones which release stored glucose (glycogen). This is normal and may last 3 days.
Decrease the dose as advised previously, even if high.
Thank you.. will do

Martha- @elizabeth is still on, and many others back on the board now that its daytime. Read BJs comment above for instructions. It might be a good idea to post at your next shot time for advice since numbers have stayed low so long and who knows what they'll be then. It may be a good idea if you do to cross post in Lantus forum. If so be sure to link this thread so they can see what went on. You could ask for dosing advice in the subject, or whatever you need. But again Elizabeth is around and can stir up more eyes if needed for any decisions, etc

Elizabeth- she came out for her am feeding. Its low carb wet. She didn't eat much, less than 1 oz. She usually polishes off 3 oz. I'm going to get a bg at +11

Thank you! I def want to do all that-- I'm not most savvy forum user, but will try to cross post, link etc.

That's great she's eating the LC. Its OK if small amount...just repeat that in a little while...better spread out like that anyway

I don't feel very confident right now, and clueless as to the next dose.
I'll get two more rising bg then hit the hay.
You've done an amazing job, Martha.
You did (and are doing) everything necessary to keep Lolly's blood glucose up. And you kept a cool head all the way through and didn't panic. You should be proud of yourself. :bighug:
But I wouldn't be surprised if you feel quite shaken by the whole experience at the moment. It's a very scary thing to go through when it's your own cat. You must be absolutely exhausted too (or will be once the adrenalin wears off....)

Your plan to get two more rising BG's is spot on. And I do hope you manage to get some rest soon.

There are lots of Lantus folks on the forum to help with dosing advice. So that can be sorted later.

I'm still around and will keep checking back here to see if you need help (or even just company!)

bg is 151 at +11 (8:15 am EST)

So, to recap we have:

AlphaTrak numbers so far:

PMPS of 63 at 9 pm (roughly 41 on a human meter)
+3 of 59 at 12 midnight (roughly 38 on a human meter) - too low.
+4 of 86 at 1am (roughly 55 on a human meter)
+4.5 of 72 at 1:30 am (about 47 on a human meter)
+5 of 70 at 2:00 am (about 45.5 on a human meter)
+5.5 of 95 at 2:30 am (about 62 on a human meter)
+6.5 of 89 at 3:20 am (about 58 on a human meter)
+6.6 of 81 at 3:40 am (about 53 on a human meter)
+7.5 of 51 at 4:40 am (about 33 on a human meter)
+8 of 83 at 5:05 am (about 54 on a human meter)
+9 of 86 at 5:55 am (about 55.9 on a human meter) - surfing steadily
+10 of 111 at 7:00 am (about 72 on a human meter)
+11 of 151 at 815am EST

Martha, that's two good rising numbers, and quite a nice jump up between those last two tests. I think you're 'out of the woods' but if you do feel able to get one more test that would be great.

Thank you Elizabeth, BJ, bettyandhank, and for anyone else I may have missed who stayed up with me and helped Lolly and me through this. I'm pretty shook up at this point, but I'll get those two more readings.

Elizabeth- (other than trying to sleep) what should I do now-- since I am skipping am dose, should I be testing her today? I have a curve from last week that shows nadir at +7, curve from two days ago shows nadir at +5. But with no am dose, I guess test doesn't mean much. So just check in with the Lantus crowd about pm dose? Thank you again :bighug:

Hi Martha,
I've just posted a link to this thread on the Lantus forum to get some dosing advice for you. There are some really good experienced Lantus folks on the forum who, I'm sure, will look through this thread and will help you. :D

How are you feeling?

Thanks for posting the link Eizabeth. betty advised me to link to the lantus forum and cross post. I'm new to forums and don't have the energy to figure out cross posting etc. I was going to tackle getting my numbers into the SS, but that's not happening right now either :( When I post later this pm, how do I post in a way that references the link?:confused:

I feel wiped and like I almost killed my cat (which apparently is what I almost did) Please God this has got to get easier. And I also feel blessed that I just managed to find this forum, sign up in time, so that you were all there for me when my vet wasn't. :bighug::):bighug::):bighug::bighug::) :cat: (can you tell that I just discovered emojis? I've only ever used emoticons. Let me show you guys again how grateful I am:

Hi Martha, you'll find the URL link to this thread at the top of the page. It looks like this:
http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/...s-ears-and-need-bg-curve-advice.131441/page-3
And you can just 'copy and paste' that link into any new post that you write to direct people back here.

There are folks here that are a whizz with spreadsheets. (I'm not one of them!). So don't fret about that. You'll have a spreadsheet up and running in no time at all.

And you didn't 'nearly kill your cat'; you may have saved her life!

Eliz

Am loving that colour coordinated smiley artwork! :D

Good morning, Martha

I hope you are getting some snoozes in. You all did really great last night. I am sorry I was not able to stay up....I've had a few nights back to back of little sleep and, at that point, I become a liability to you...not a help.:) Betty, BJ, and our darling UK friend, Elizabeth did super but you kept a cool head...very important.

I'm an experienced Lantus and levemir user and can give you some dosing suggestions for the next step but it's really helpful to have that spreadsheet. I know you are exhausted and I'll be glad to set up your SS and put the numbers in it from last night. I will need you to send me a private message, though, so I can get your Gmail address and turn the ownership of the SS over to you once I have created it.

To send me a PM, click on my user ID to the the left and then "start conversation". I'll get the SS set up for you and then once I get your gmail address, you'll have it in no time. It is the least I can do to help you since I wasn't able to stay up and I guarantee you'll be too tired to make a SS today. It makes it much easier for us to advise you on dose if we can see the numbers.
:bighug::bighug:

Edited to add: when you copy the link Elizabeth left for you, then go to the Lantus/levemir forum, click on "start a new post", and when the text box opens, click on the paper clip above the text box (it's for a link but it looks like a paper clip to me). A box will pop open and put the link in the space provided and click on "insert". You'll see the link appear in the text box.

There ya go, Martha. The wonderful Marje will help with the spreadsheet. :joyful:
That will make it easier for you to see Lolly's progress, and easier for others to help if you need any advice.

I hope you're getting some good rest. :bighug:

Oh good, she's come back up. I'm so glad you were able to keep monitoring her overnight. Your efforts kept her safe.

+12 of 178 at 8:15 am (about 116 on a human meter) which is a nice number. It will go up since you didn't shoot, and that is to be expected. "Better too high for a day, than too low for a moment"

Martha, You did an absolutely fantastic job keeping your kitty safe last night. We are so very, very proud of you.

Pajama Party at Martha's house last night!

I bet you were shaking in your boots. I know I was, just reading through this thread.

Thank you so much to @BJM, @bettyandhank , @Elizabeth and Bertie for helping out new member Martha last night.

@Martha - Please accept member Marje and Gracie's offer to set up your spreadsheet for you. She does this frequently for people and it will only take her a few minutes.

Again, good job Martha!!!

Martha

I took the liberty of doing the SS for you. It has all the curve numbers you posted on the excel sheet plus last night's numbers and feeding (as close as I could figure them out). You might need to edit the feeding in "Remarks" a bit. If you can please PM me the email address associated with your google account, I can transfer the ownership to you in about two seconds. If you don't have a google account, you will need to get one before I can transfer the SS to you. Let me know if you need help doing that.

One thing that I noticed when doing the SS is that the shot times have really been variable. With lantus and levemir, an early shot can act as a dose increase and a late shot can act as a dose reduction. While you don't have to be shooting exactly at the same minute every cycle, it's best to stay within 30 minutes of the previous shot time as much as you can unless circumstances warrant otherwise. There are times when it's wiser to stall for an hour or, if Lolly were to have a big bounce, to shoot early. We can help you make those decisions until you are feeling comfortable enough to make them without our suggestions.

Also, if your work schedule is not consistent, let us know and we can help you with a shot time schedule. It's very important to always get a preshot test every cycle. Think what would have happened if you hadn't gotten one last night and then tested at +3 to get the 59. You wouldn't know how much she had dropped or how fast.....which is really important info especially as low as she was.

I believe you skipped the shot this morning. Lolly is doing great and we don't want to slow her progress but I would definitely shoot no more than 1.25u tonight. She might still need a little more reduced from that but I am basing that on the number of reductions she's already had pretty close together.

Please let us know what questions you have.

Hi Martha!! Hope you got some good sleep. You did such a great job keeping your girl safe last night and learned so much.

What a nice offer. Take her up on it Martha! It will make it so much easier for you and those helping.
ETA she beat me to it while I was writing! Nice!

betty advised me to link to the lantus forum and cross post. I'm new to forums and don't have the energy to figure out cross posting etc.
That was as I was falling asleep and thinking Elizabeth was there, but in case you needed more eyes or had questions on dosing or anything else you could always ask in lantus forum too. Someone already has now explained how you add a link to another thread. Plus sounds like extra helpful @elizabeth already brought your thread here to attention there as well.

Lolly will probably have high numbers from skipping the shot and dry food like bj said, no biggie and to be expected. But we can help you get back on track. Just post before your next dose.

And definitely get some FAncy feast with gravy....but I saw the grilled chicken variety on a bad list this week, Truth about Pet foods site I think, so i'd pick a different flavor..any of the ones in gravy are high carb to keep on hand should you need them again. Rhiannon gave a good tip to mark the top so you know they are HC and don't get mixed in with your regular food. They have the gravy lovers ones in seafood which you said she likes, maybe try those. You need something to have around she can't resist seeing how disinterested she can be last night.
I'd maybe get some fishy FF LC too, some options since she is picky..to be sure you can get food on board when you need to.

What a night of adrenaline. I sure hope you got some rest and are feeling better. And how's Miss Lolly? I bet she can use some neosporin PR and a break today. Hopefully she got rested too.

:bighug::bighug::bighug: betty

Hi everyone, please accept huge thanks from Lolly and me. For last night and for the days to come... I just got up about 1/2 hr ago so got at least 5 hrs which is actually good for me.

I hate to test her again, she's very unhappy about it now, but will do one now and get back to everyone. I'll start new thread in Lantus now?
