Do you serve one or many flavors of same brand food?

I'm curious - do you serve the same food all the time, or do you serve a variety? I tend to buy different flavors (2-3) of the same brand (Friskies, BFF, FF, etc) because they come in variety packs. However, back when I was just feeding prescription diet to all of them, it was the same same same.

What is the benefit to variety v. same? I'm thinking of finding what they like best and buying it 100%, no variety.

ALSO, related question, why is it that my cats love Friskies but are turning their nose up (well, more like begrudgingly eating) BFF, which is supposed to be a better quality food? Should I just be grateful that kitties like the cheaper stuff? I don't mind the $, just want them to like to eat (they are all thinner now that they all eat low carb).

Thanks!

Mostly, I serve Friskies Turkey and Giblet, with variations on other Poultry flavors when I can't find the Turkey and Giblet (They had a bit of a manufacturing problem and are still getting that plant up to normal production levels).

They seem to like the Friskies more than others. I dabbled in Wellness b/c they come in the bigger cans, but peeewww that made Lee's poo VERY stinky. FF is just not practical with only being available in 3 oz cans, I have to open 5 cans each feeding for all three kitties.

I am sticking with the seafood varietals right now with Friskies. The mixed grill that came in a variety pack didn't seem to agree with them. I'd like to order from Chewy.com for delivery but want to make sure they are all good with the final answer :)

I feed mine several flavors. All are fed Friskies canned foods. I have 7 cats and they are all fed the same flavor for each meal. I change the flavor they are fed each meal.

My two are extremely fussy and will only eat fish and nothing else. So I feed the Fancy Feast Seafood variety pack.

Juliet and Silver

I'm feeding Hank a variety of flavors from Friskies and 9 Lives.

I haven't found a flavor that he doesn't like yet.

I rotate several flavors of Fancy Feast & Wellness. It's good to have variety if they tolerate change. If for some reason there's a product recall or flavor discontinuation you can just continue rotating. There are studies on the importance of feeding kittens & young cats different flavors, shapes & textures of food.

thanks all, i had to search for this again after people talked about being careful to not feed too much seafood, and I couldnt remember if people feed the same flavor all day or if it was Ok to switch up each meal. i dont want upset tummies, which is why I would tend to stick to the same flavor for a whole day.

Grayson didn't do well w/ red meat, so we stuck with FF chicken and turkey/giblets. Spartacus, however, likes a variety, and prefers the beef and beef/chicken, though I get a full assortment, including a few cans of seafood, which I limit.

They yumm'ed up the T&G and Poultry Platter, so I ordered the 13 oz cans from Chewy! So now it'll be 50/50 seafood/landfood.
Thanks!!

I have always found cats to be more persnickety about their food than dogs. They not only like more of a variety, they demand it! I rotate the flavors for all my cats and I serve primarily pate to my cat with diabetes. Her sugar has a tendency to spike with other forms of food. Again, all animals re unique and may respond in different fashion to change of food, brands, textures, etc. Experiment and find out about your little one. But, only change one thing at a time until you see a consistent response on behalf of your cat. Good luck from Jane and Stewey

I've been serving a variety of Friskies pates. I try to limit seafood, plus my cats don't seem to care for the Salmon flavor. We do a lot of the turkey, chicken, poultry platter, I think there's a tuna & chicken, supreme supper.

But now that Tasha has CKD, we're moving to the Friskies Special Diet and all we could find yesterday was whatever it is with the liver and the Ocean Whitefish. We did 10 liver, 2 whitefish. That won't last long (2 cats, 3 cans total per day) so I have to find more soon.

Our vet recommended continuing a variety as we've been doing in case of production changes.

Correction: Just fed the fur-freaks. It's Turkey and Giblets we're feeding. Not liver. Sounds ick to me either way!

As I recall, I found three friskies pates he liked and rotated them. I was just glad he was eating something other than dry.

When I finally got dry food addict Wink switched from dry to wet food, the only flavor he would eat was the Fancy Feast Turkey & Giblet pate. We have since managed to get him eating other of the Fancy Feast pate flavors and the Friskies Special Diet Beef & Chicken or Turkey and Giblet pate flavor. I was so worried there after the switch to wet food, that Wink would suddenly take a dislike to the Turkey & Giblet flavor, that I felt it was prudent to get him to eat other flavors. He still dislikes the fishy flavors but anything with beef, turkey or chicken is ok in his mind.

I prefer to give him at least two flavors that alternate. After awhile he seems to not like it though and it's been increasingly difficult to find something that works for him as he's also CKD.

You know, there is a universal law that if you buy any one cat food in bulk your cats will somehow know and will never ever want to eat it again.... (Strange, but so often true!) :D

I buy a number of varieties in different flavours, and rotate them. If they get tired of any one variety I just stick it at the back of the shelf and try them with it again a couple of months later when, hopefully, they think "Oooh look, something new and interesting. Yum, yum, yum!"
The reason I buy a range of cat foods is because I want to be sure I give my cats a balanced diet, and, if I'm honest, I don't entirely trust pet food manufacturers to get it right all the time....;) So, by feeding different varieties and flavours I feel that I may have a better chance of covering all the bases....

Different flavors, but be aware than the carb count for the same food can vary from one flavor to the next.

Just like humans, our cats want variety. I feed FF chicken, chicken/liver, and turkey giblets mainly and mainly those flavors with low carbs. Every now and then I give them salmon and other fish flavors. I can tell when they're getting tired of a certain flavor and then I switch and they'll devour the new flavor until they get tired of it too.
