8/16 Meadow AMBG 67, +1 101

Checked BG twice this AM to make sure # was correct. She wasn't acting weird or sick. Got the HC canned food out & she turned her nose up. I gave her HC dry food and she ate that, so I poured some on the canned food and she ate the majority of it. Checked BG +1 = 101. Called the vet who said not to shoot. He didn't seem too worried about low #, but did said not to shoot if # is 150 or below. I put more HC food on her plate before I left for work. Also, I've decided if she doesn't eat & her # is under 250, I'm not going to shoot. Sorry if that upsets anyone, but that's my decision.

In regards to the prior post: I think there may be some confusion. Meadow has been eating canned food for a year now. I bought dry food on Sunday because she is refusing to eat the canned food now. A timer for canned food would be pointless and a waste of money if she won't eat the canned food inside it. I have left out canned food, and 12 hrs later it was still there untouched.

Hi Amber

thank you for clearing up the dry food thing. Sorry about the confusion!

Since you didn't shoot this number it would actually be AMBG

Hope the numbers don't go too high by the time you get home, but still - what a nice surprise!!

Nice morning numbers. I hope you don't have too high a PMPS and Meadow surfs for you

Re: 8/16 Meadow AMPS 67, +1 101

Amber, for how long has Meadow not been eating well? I agree that it's better for her to eat dry food than to not eat.

Re: 8/16 Meadow AMPS 67, +1 101

I'm sorry you guys are having eating troubles.
Sending Meadow heaps of eating vines.

Re: 8/16 Meadow AMPS 67, +1 101

Meadow has gradually gotten worse on eating over the last 7-10 days. It went from her eating 4 cans a day (more if I would have let her), to a couple of tablespoons, to refusing to eat canned at all. This is a sign to me that she is getting and feeling better. She was a very picky eater before. Since she was diagnosed in October '09, she would eat anything, even jumping up in my plate while I was eating and start pulling food off my plate. Now she's back to her old prissy self... which isn't good since she needs insulin. The canned I gave her this morning was Wellness shrimp, sardine & lobster. She looked at me like you're kidding, right? What other cats do you know who get lobster for breakfast?!

Re: 8/16 Meadow AMPS 67, +1 101

do you know about how many calories she has eaten per day for the last few days?

I'm concerned about hepatic lipidosis, which occurs when cats don't eat enough. It can happen in as little as 3 days. That, and ketones. A cat who is not eating and is not getting enough insulin can develop ketones quickly. Diabetic cats are also prone to pancreatitis, which can make them lose their appetite.

If I were you, I would consider having Meadow checked out at the vet, soon. There might be a reason she's not eating, besides just being picky.

Re: 8/16 Meadow AMPS 67, +1 101

Don't hit me if you have opened can after can but have you tried some other brands of wet?

Re: 8/16 Meadow AMPS 67, +1 101

Meadow is allergic to grains so that limits what she can eat. Also, any food that has by-products in it causes her to vomit like the exorcist. I have given her Trader Joe's canned tuna cat food, Wellness canned chicken, Wellness canned turkey, Natural Balance L.I.D. canned in duck, venison, chicken, AND salmon. The dry foods are Wellness Complete, Natural Balance L.I.D., and Taste of the Wild. She will eat the last one. I called Taste of the Wild & the carb value is 19.7%, and Natural Balance is 38.7%. I don't think she's not eating from an illness just because she still wants what I'm eating sometimes. And she will eat off my plate. She doesn't want cat food anymore.

Re: 8/16 Meadow AMPS 67, +1 101

Some people used "chicken dust" on wet when their cat was picky. Libbby, anyone, what exactly is "chicken dust"?

Re: 8/16 Meadow AMPS 67, +1 101

Well, you know her best I guess. That must be so frustrating for you. My two get picky and now that I started with the freeze-dried chicken, they really look upset when it isn't on every darn meal!

Don't we wish there was more of a selection of foods that didn't have by-products!
I mix Feline Future powder with raw chicken and mix that in with some Evo 95% and Wellness chicken.
It is a real challenge to find something they will eat.
I wish you well with this issue....but it sounds as if you have quite a selection of things that you offer her.
:YMSIGH:
The chicken dust is the freeze-dried chicken ...we use the Pure Bites....shave it onto their food...most kitties love it!

Re: 8/16 Meadow AMPS 67, +1 101

Thanks Pat -- I thought that was what it was but wasn't positive.

I have some of that freeze dried chicken -- do you want me to mail you some? :-D
PM me your address if you do.

Re: 8/16 Meadow AMPS 67, +1 101

the chicken dust doesn't work for me but what does is tuna juice, I pour that over their raw or wet food when they get picky or I hide a Temptation treat in the wet food and they eat it up. You can try that.
Hope something works for you and Meadow

Re: 8/16 Meadow AMPS 67, +1 101

Considering it didn't look like she touched the food I left her today, her +11 was 312 & PMPS 429. I usually sprinkle Brewer's yeast on the food and she attacks it, but even this she is turning her nose up. I opened another can of LC food and baked a tilapia filet and crumbled it on the food. She just sat there and looked at me like I was a stupid human. After she walked in the other room, I got the treats out and she came running at full speed to me. I hid 3 treats under the canned food, and she nosed around until she found them and ignored the rest of the food. She is being a brat! With what her BG is, missing a meal isn't going to hurt her.

Off topic: Does anyone know how I can upload a picture of Meadow? Each time I try, it says the image is too big. I don't know how to downsize it.

Re: 8/16 Meadow AMPS 67, +1 101

Geez -- you cooked fish and Meadow turned up her nose? She is picky.

The other inducements: bonito/tuna flakes, parmesan cheese, any freeze dried treat (there's also salmon in addition to chicken), and jerky treats.

Re: 8/16 Meadow AMPS 67, +1 101

Sorry you are having problems with getting Meadow to eat. That must be so frustrating. I'll PM you my e-mail address and can send you a re-sized version. I'd love to see her!
