Youky BG Curves Insight

Hi Everyone!

Youky is new to the group and has had diabetes for a little under a year now. He is currently on Lantus and is now up to 5 units twice a day. When first diagnosed he started on only .5 units and we were told he’d be a good candidate for remission. He is a 17 pound orange (with a touch of white) cat. I feed him friskies wet food, typically mixed grill, poultry, or turkey and giblets. His stomach seems to hiccup after eating though, any thoughts on that?

I recently learned how to do the BG curve at home and did a test last week, in which the vet upped his units to 5 when he was previously on 4 units. Leading up to the test he was beginning to have large pee clumps and was getting very ravenous for food. Here were his results:

Feeding time: 5a, done around 530a.
1st sample: 537A, 435
*Insulin at 546A
2nd sample: 744A, 401
3rd sample: 948A, 372
4th sample: 1137A, 348
5th sample: 147P, 334
*noticed him getting hungry around 320p
6th sample: 345P, 382

Since being upped to the 5 units he seems to be doing a little better. I feed him twice a day right before his insulin. But I’ve definitely noticed that it’s a struggle for him to go the 12 hours before eating. He tends to get hungry about 1-1.5 hours before his insulin. Any thoughts on that?

Any advice or information to share would be great!

If he's hungry, feed him. Most of us feed several meals throughout the day. I usually feed four times. Just no food at least 2 hours prior to the preshot test so the number is not food influenced.

You are jumping to be doses in big increments. We recommend dose increases in 0.25-0.5 increments. This is so you don't skip the ideal dose. We have two dosing protocols for lantus which you can find here

I'm glad you have started home testing.... That's vital in getting him regulated. Try to get a preshot test and mid cycle test each day. Here's a link to the Google Sheets template. With lantus insulin there is no need to restrict meals to twice a day with the insulin, in fact it is better for the cat to eat multiple smaller meals or free feed if that’s what he was used to. Vyktor was always freefed and stayed freefed after he got diabetes, with the exception of removing food 2 hours before his shot as Janet mentioned.

Yay for home testing this is going to give you so much more knowledge and better control and you will love the spreadsheet for yourself too. Glad you found us :cat:

Right now I have been continuing to feed youky at 5a and 5p and then giving insulin right after. But he is getting ravenous an hour before his feeding time, like right now. What is the cause of this? What should I be doing? I also just took a reading and he is at 436mg.

I have a question. I’m still getting used to searching for information on here, but where does everyone purchase the lantus pen insulin from? The price at the vet is quite expensive so I’m looking into more affordable options. I read that marks in Canada is a good place. Does that ship to the US? And is the shipping transport safe and reliable? I’m in CT. Thank you!!!!

Hi Everyone!

I am currently doing a BG Curve for Youky today and was wondering if I could get some insight on how he is doing. This will only be the third curve that I have done. I have the first two curves that I did in the 2020 tab. I am still getting used to the home testing so I haven't started doing daily samples yet.

After the curve I did on 10/30/2020 the vet had me increase Youky's insulin from 4 units to 5 units.
The vet didn't seem to know why his curve on 12/05/2020 was the way it was so she suggested a urine or blood test.
I had his urine tested on 12/18/20. The vet did a cultured test and his results were fine. With those results, she suggested the next step would be an ultra sound to see what was going on internally.

I want the best for Youky and to give him the best care, but he doesn't really have many concerning symptoms to jump to an ultrasound yet.

Other things to note:
  • He is eating 1.5 cans of friskies pate turkey and giblets at breakfast and again at dinner. I sometimes give him a tiny late night snack of the friskies before bed.
  • He tends to get the hiccups after he eats, I'm assuming it's from eating so quickly?
  • He doesn't use the liter box excessively, however, when he drinks water he does drink a lot in one sitting.
  • He also somehow hurt his front right paw yesterday 01/09/2020 in the afternoon when I wasn't home. He can walk, but has a pretty bad limp and doesn't want to put much pressure on that paw. I've been having him rest and using ice as much as he'll let me. This morning he seemed to be able to put a little more pressure on it, but I am going to keep him resting so it can heal quickly.

Try 1 can morning, 1/2 afternoon, 1 can at dinner, 1/2 can before bed.

Give it a couple days. He may have landed wrong and twisted an ankle. Does it look swollen?

thank you I’ll give that meal plan a try and see how he does!

And I can’t really tell if it’s swollen or not. He seemed to walk better on it after a lot of rest and ice but later in the day seemed to be limping worse again. I’m gonna keep an eye on it for another day.
 
Also, I’m not sure if the odd bg curve results could be due to not changing the injection site? I have only ever injected his insulin in the scruff since he has been diagnosed.
