The bag of Wysong Fundamentals Dry Dog food says it's also suitable for cats.

From a diabetes standpoint, is this food OK for normal cats or kittens that do not have diabetes? I think I'm asking if the carbs are low enough that non-diabetic kittens/cats (probably) wouldn't develop diabetes from eating this food long-term.

THANK YOU.

Cats are obligate carnivores (i.e., they cannot adequately metabolize carbohydrates) whereas dogs are omnivores. They do best on a diet that is more protein -- preferably in the form of muscle meat rather than by-products or "meal" (which is probably the less desirable parts of an animal that have been ground up). The second product in the ingredient list is rice. When putting this through a carb calculator, the food is 31% carb. IMHO, that's too high in carbs for a cat.

The other issue is that like any dry food, its moisture content is low. Cats don't have a large thirst drive. In the wild, they get their moisture from their prey. The higher moisture content in canned food addresses their low thirst drive. Making sure a cat, especially a diabetic cat, gets enough water is important. Diabetes is hard on the kidneys. Keeping your cat well hydrated will help to prevent kidney disease.

Also, taurine is absolutely essential for cats. I would have to do more research to know if the amount that's in this food is adequate for cats.
