My 8 yr old long haired cat was just diagnosed and has not started insulin yet, still in the mail. My problem is he will not eat wet food. I have tried 10 different types and he just licks the juice off. Any ideas to get Slinky to eat canned food? I have also tried boiled chicken and he will not eat it either.
 
Those transitioning tips that Aine give you are what I used to switch my sugardude Wink from dry to wet food. I think we tried almost every tip in that document to get Wink to switch over. It wasn't easy, but persistence and patience paid off. Wink became a diet controlled diabetic once he was switched from the high carb dry food to low carb wet food.

If Slinky likes the "juice" have you tried adding some water to the canned food to sort of make a gravy? Think applesauce consistency.

That's the only way I've been able to get either of my 2 to eat wet food (both dry food addicts for 11 years). They love it turned into a sort of thick soup, but won't even think about eating it otherwise. Plus it gets them some extra water since cats usually don't drink enough.
 
And for the truly adventurous, you might nab a can or two of low carb, spread it in a jelly roll pan, and bake (similar temp to cookies/crackers/crisps) until the desired dryness./crispness Turn over occasionally to help the drying process.

Note that the home will smell like baking cat food!

I have a dry food addict and aside from the tips you will see. I also buy a raw freeze dried product - called Stella & Chewy's freezed dried cat dinners -- I serve it dry and it seems to work to satisfy that dry crunching kibble need. Of course it's not kibbles, but it works as a substitute and it's not high carb (at least it doesn't appear to be reading the ingredients).

I also did the counting kibble method too - started with 2o pieces and placed it on top of the wet food - so she would be forced to eat the wet with the pieces. I reduced the pieces each day until she just had a bowl of wet.....worth a try

And get some forti flora - it's a probiotic made by Purina, yet has similar ingredients to the flavoring on kibbles - many cats seem to like it.

So I got Slinky his BG meter yesterday and when he was tested at the vet it was 490 ,that was last Tuesday. Over the last 2 days I have watered down and also tried blending his food. Since he is eating more of the wet food I decided to try my hand at testing his BG level this morning. Before he was feed it was 423 and after a half hour after he was fed it was 401. Still high was getting lower. :woot:
