Summer and Susie (GA)

Member Since 2020
I was thinking today that if anything happened to me there would be no one to help Susie with her insulin testing and shots. I cannot teach my 89 year-old Mom to do the testing, or the shots, and I just wouldn't be able to trust her judgement at her age.

I know that all members should have confidentiality but if I were to get sick, and need someone to come get Susie and take care of her until I was better, where would I go? What would I do?

I would be happy to register my information, in Florida, if it meant someone who needed diabetic help with their kitty could come to me for support if they were to find themselves incapacitated. Would others be interested too?

You can start with to see if there is any Vet Med Universities and/or Animal Hospitals Vet Tech Volunteers, in your closest city areas.

I will ask my vet, too. I know he has a least one vet tech that has a diabetic cat at home. Maybe he could help. I think it is important that we all have a Plan A and a Plan B! The closest Vet Med University is about three hours away (University of Florida) but not an impossible journey.

@Summer and Susie - My Long Long Long Since 2006 FDMB friend Carolyn and Spot, have the Invaluable Know-How you need to find the right helpers there in Your Florida

See what Carolyn writes in this post 2012 post. She has her own Biznizz. And even Diabetic Pro. Plus An American Navy Pro. https://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/cat-sitter-nyc-vacation-opportunity.75621/#post-828289
Lots of good information in this thread that you linked, Ann. Thanks. Local experienced vet techs and pet sitters. I was even thinking that if I became knowledgeable enough, and experienced enough, with treating Susie than I might mention to my vet that I would be available to help other owners in the area that also have diabetic cats should they get sick or want to go on vacation.

I've moved around a bit. One of the first things I've done when moving is (1) find a vet -- usually a cat only vet and (2) find a cat sitter. When I was moving to Columbus, I actually paid attention to where some of the members who were in Ohio lived. I found 2 or 3 people who were in Columbus and asked for the names of vets and sitters. I interviewed people to make sure they were going to meet my obsessive, picky needs. It worked out wonderfully. I have a great vet and I trust my cat sitter completely. She cared for my kitties when I needed surgery and when I needed to go out of town on an emergency.

You can always post a note on this forum asking for referrals in your area. Many of the organizations that provide child care or elder care are now also providing referrals for petsitting.

Thanks, Sienne. I am reaching out to my vet to see if he knows of any experience pet sitters in the area and if he has any vet techs with feline diabetes testing/shooting experience that might assist me if I get sick or have to leave my house. I don't think any of the members, that I have seen, are in the East, Central Florida area so I don't know if a post asking for referrals will help me. You were smart to do the planning for your kitty when moving to a new area.

Summer, where in Florida are you? I have 2 personal friends in Florida. One might not be the right one, since he doesn't have animals himself, he is my old I Q Tech school 1984-1986 classmate living in St.Augustine, running the AGV Robotics company Amerden. But he knows what Florida is like and have lost his house 3 times already in short due the hurricanes, and it is one of the best states with Evac plans and routes and also for where those with animals can go to in Evac Shelters.

The other one lives in Daytona, Bob and The Boyz. His Arnie was diabetic, and after Arnie he got Louie, and rescued a Momma cat and her babies, adopted them out and kept Chase. He has also hurricane Evaced with The Boyz several times.

Would you like me to try and ask Bob for tips for you?

I am in Merritt Island. Probably an hour from Daytona. My Mom and I evacuated for Hurricane Matthew in 2016. Luckily, we have relatives in Tallahassee that took us in. I did not have Susie at the time. If Bob has any suggestions for me that would be nice but being so far away I don't think they would help. I have contacted my vet to see if he knows of anyone, with diabetic experience, who would "pet sit" should I get sick. Surely, he has been asked this before. Thanks, Ann.
