Hi!
My little guy has been in remission, but his no’s. have shot up recently into the 200’s due to a stressful vet visit and the p-titis flare. So I’ve been doing testing in the a.m. and p.m.’s to keep an eye on things.
He was prescribed transdermal buprenorphine for the pancreatitis flare.
My question is this: when I apply the buprenorphine gel to the inside of his ear flap (I alternate ears for each dose), will the med affect the blood sample I get when I prick the ear to test him? Have any of you had to use a transdermal med like buprenorphine while testing, and did it affect the accuracy of your blood glucose numbers?
Thank you for any insight or thoughts,
Susan & Scout

We have had people give transdermal meds before, without impacting the blood sugar. You might want to test on the other ear from where you are giving the medicine. Buprenorphine does not impact blood sugar. Neko got it regularly, by mouth.

Hi Wendy,
Scout has taken the Buprenorphine by mouth many a time-I was just concerned that the spot where I was applying Buprenorphine might contaminate the blood I was taking (hours later) from that ear. I can only draw blood from his right ear, it turns out, his left ear is super sensitive and he’ll have none of it.
I didn’t know if the transdermal medication impacted the blood glucose results. Thank you for responding.
