I am using an accu-chek aviva but am running out of strips. My neighbor- thank God for her- has given me at least 150 strips and I've used almost all of them in a month! They are too expensive for me to buy so I was looking at other meters online. I found a CHEAP one but I know you usually get what you pay for but I thought maybe with it being for human health care it might be regulated better? IDK anyway- I was looking at the PRODIGY VOICE TALKING BLOOD GLUCOSE MONITORING SYSTEM. The talking option doesn't matter to me but the test strip prices can't be beat! 50 for $7.99 online!
Just looking for advice on a better quality cheap meter/strips. I'm on a limited budget due to Chuck's vet bills and my own medical bills. Wish I could win the lotto! haha
 
Haven't heard of that meter, so can't comment on it's quality. I use the Relion Prime from Walmart. Strips are 50 for $9. The good thing about it is, if you have a Walmart around you, you can get the strips quickly when necessary.
 
Can't help with this one, Steph. I'm in Canada and we pay a LOT more for strips. etc. The good thing is that human insulin like Lantus is a lot cheaper here. ProZinc isn't though! As Sharon said, the Relion Prime is a favourite among American members. I've been thinking about trying Freestyle Lite strips in my AlphaTrak meter because of the horrible high cost of AT strips. I've seen people compare glucose meters to computer printers - the meter is dirt cheap but the strips are $$$$$ like printer cartridges.

One thing to check if you can is how small a drop of blood the strip needs. Smaller is better especially if your cat gets impatient during testing. Good wicking action by the strip is also a plus.
 
I used the Precision Xtra because I got it free. I was able to go on eBay (seniors sell their excess strips) and buy strips at less than half the price of the drug stores. But you do lose the advantage of being able to run down to Walmart and get cheap strips day or night.

As Kris says, be sure it takes a tiny sample.
 
The Relion Confirm or Micro require a smaller sample than the Prime, but the strips are a bit higher, not too bad though. I have a Micro for a backup but use the Prime daily, since Colin's ears bleed easily.
 
I'm testing out Freestyle Lite strips in my AlphaTrak meter and have a table of a few comparison results on my SS (same blood drop for AT/FS tests). I'm going to add to this table until I get a feel for how they compare. So far, they're almost the same. I'm paying attention to the cat code on the AT strip vial. The FS strips still aren't cheap but I can get them for less than half what I pay for AT strips.
 
I ended up buying the ReliOn Prime. 100 strips for $18 (rounded up). It's very lightweight. I like it so far.
