Why would I not shoot under 200?

Hello,

My vet recently told me not to shoot anything if Lana is under 200.
I do see different opinions on this forum and am slightly confused.
Don’t understand why I wouldn’t shoot under 200 if the green zone is much lower than that.

I obviously don't want Lana going too high or low but can I shoot her with .5 unit instead of the full 1 unit if shes close to the 200 mark?

Sorry if stupid, i tried to find if someone asked same question but didnt find it.

We recommend new members don’t shoot under 200 until they get some data.
Have you looked at the two dosing methods for Lantus? I would recommend you look at both and choose one of them.
Looking at Lana’s SS I can see she has dropped under 68 on the alphatrak meter on 2 separate occasions. When this happens you must reduce the dose of insulin. Otherwise you risk Lana having a hypo.
We recommend reducing or increasing the dose by 0.25 units.
Do you have a hypo kit set up? In case it is needed.
If I were you I would read through the 2 dosing methods and choose one. If you choose SLGS you reduce the dose whenever Lana drops under 90. If you choose TR you reduce the dose if she drops under 68. Please don’t be complacent about low numbers as it is unsafe.
You won’t get Lana regulated any quicker by trying to rush it. In fact it will probably take longer.

Thank you, I believe SLGS will be better for me.
The dose was just reduced to 1 unit instead of 2. But I’ll stop shooting under 200 starting this AMPS.

With SLGS you hold the dose for 7 days, then curve and evaluate the situation and see if you need to increase or stay at the same dose. If she drops under 90 you reduce the dose.
Once you have more data you can start to shoot lower than 200.. . just go down gradually.
Keep posting and asking for advice and support. KNa is doing well for a newly diagnosed kitty.

you might like to start posting over on the Lantus page now

Thank you! It’s nice to hear she’s doing well. I’ve felt like everyday is a reoccurring nightmare!

Just woke up to test her and she’s at 134 so I’m skipping the dose :).
Also, I see solid poops for the first time in 3 weeks

Can you take a test during the cycles please? Around the +4 to +7 area? Both am and pm cycles? That will tell us how low the dose is taking Lana. Lantus dosing is based on how low the dose is taking her. She may need less insulin if you are continuing to have to skip.

Okay, I’ll try to get that data as best I can. It sucks that I’m not home most of the day :(.

I know it’s hard when you have to work. Remember all tests help. So you can get tests just before you leave for work and when you come home. And you always have the pm cycle to get some tests in. :bighug:

The PM is definitely easier!
I leave for work at 10:30am which is when I give Lana her shot. And I’m usually gone until 8-9.

Her ears have little red bruises on em. is there something that I’m doing wrong with the testing by the way?
I use a soft wet towel behind the ear and have the lancing set at the lowest level.

Are you holding the towel gently over the prick afterwards for a minute to stop any bruising? That might help.
How is she getting snacks while you are at work? Do you have an automatic timed feeder?

I have no choice but to leave her food out. Her eating has been a real struggle in general. And with her CKD it’s tough too.
I ask my roommate to remove her plate -2 PMPS.

I just found automatic wet food feeders! Ordered one of Amazon, let’s see if miss picky will eat from it.
Lana won’t eat off square plates, only circular hahaha.
She won’t drink water out of bowls, only fountains.
I’m well aware she’s spoiled

Well done! I fed Sheba all her meals out of the automatic feeder for a few days so she got used to the idea that the feeder meant food. An automatic feeder is a godsend to diabetic parents!
