When to give insulin dose

My Lucy was recently diagnosed as having diabetes. This is all pretty new to me so any advice is greatly appreciated! I am wondering what everyone's advice is as to when I should administer my cats insulin. I've heard 30 minutes after meal. Is this correct. She is taking prozinc if that makes a difference. Also, is it ok that she eat after at any point? Will it mess up the readings? Ty in advance!!

With ProZinc, you do not need to wait 30 minutes after the cat finishes eating to shoot the insulin. The procedure is test blood glucose, feed and shoot insulin. You can even shoot the insulin while Lucy is eating. The reason you do not need to wait after eating is because ProZinc generally takes two hours until onset (the time when it begins to lower BG.). So you actually have quite a bit of time between the time you give the insulin and the time it will lower BG.

Now if you were using Vetsulin/Caninsulin, you would need to wait, but with PZ you won’t.

Thank you for your response. That clarifies things a bit. I have been reading so many differing opinions its very confusing. That's basically the process I had been following so far. Is there an ideal quantity she should be eating prior to dosage? What are your thoughts about meals other than the am and pm pre insulin meals? Prior to all this kitty was more used to eating several small meals throughout the day/night. Do you recommend the just 2 meals method or eating smaller more frequent meals still ok?

She definitely should be eating multiple smaller low carb wet meals (we call them mini meals or snacks). Feeding two or three small meals prior to nadir is a very good idea and will help prevent too-rapid drops in BG. We don’t want her to drop too rapidly (more than 100 points per hour) because this can cause bouncing. I recommend to all my new people to feed these snacks at +2, +4 and possibly at +6. I just don’t recommend feeding very much after nadir because it can shorten the duration of the insulin and cause numbers to rise prematurely.

Also, she should not have food for the two hours prior to the evening test (scan if using a Libre) so that you have a more accurate number before you shoot (and you know that number is not inflated by food.)

Unfortunately Lucy stopped eating the one wet food she kind of liked, hills k/D pate. She has always been a picky eater and not a fan of wet food. In fact for some reason she stopped eating the dry hills K/d and purina kidney care too she had been on. It seemed like one day just full stop. Very strange. But she was dropping weight and needing to eat , also to be able to give insulin, so my vet suggested anything she will eat, give. At least in the mean time. I got a hills senior vitality dry food, she likes it, and has started eating on own again with help of mirataz.
I'm feeding at around 7 am with insulin and 7 pm with insulin . I come home on my lunch break between 12 and 2 ish to try and encourage more eats. Is there 1 or 2 food/snack from that list you provided that I should try?
Also unsure what is meant by +2 +4 etc. ?
