When max comes hone

i have a question, hopefully I will be bringing max home in the next couple of days, the vet is trying to get him regulated on Vetsulin. Monday started out with 1 unit, numbers only came down to 400's so today they increased to 2 units twice a day, will try 3 units tomorrow, when I do get him home, and I know his numbers will be lower at home with less stress, what if when I check and his number in late evening is 140-160, do I give him his evening dose, a lesser dose or none? I sure don't wanting it getting too low???

The general rule of thumb is not to shoot (administer insulin) if your kitty is under 200. This will change as you become more experienced, but we always want to err on the side of caution.

The best thing for you to do would be to test Max, then post his number here, for us to see, if you are in any doubt; at that point, someone will be able to assist you more definitively. Max's BG levels will probably come down some once he is back home and settled in with his Mom, so he may need a dose reduction after a bit.

By the way, I use Vetsulin for my Squallie and, while it definitely can be tricky to work with, it has ultimately worked wonderfully for him. Lantus, Levemir and Pro Zinc are less harsh, though, and may be longer-lasting, although I've never had a problem with Vetsulin not lasting the full 12 hours.

You may want to remind them that vet stress may elevate the glucose 100-180 mg/dL, so levels taken while at the vet may be quite different from those taken at home. And that means that whatever level they think should be given when at the vet could very well be too high of a dose when at home and not stressed.
Find out how much of a drop a given dose gets; this may help you gauge what, if any, adjustments may need to be done at home based on your home testing.
