? when Lantus pen is almost finished

Hi. I was wondering if one is supposed to try to get every last drop of insulin out of the pen or discard it when it gets low. I use a syringe to draw out of the pen, but I don't think the syringe was able to draw anything out when there was only a little insulin left in the pen. I did some testing by attempting to draw with the syringe, then squirting on my hand; sometimes I felt some insulin squirt and other times nothing. So, I decided to throw the pen out and started a new one. I think my cat may actually have missed some does because nothing actually made it into the syringe when the pen got too low on insulin. It seemed like the pen stayed around the 20 line for an awfully long time too, without completely running out, which makes me think even more that I was drawing no insulin out and missing doses. If I'm right, how low should I let the pen get? I don't want to waste too much insulin either. Thank you.

I was able to use my pens to the last drop. However, the plunger always moved down. If it doesn't maybe you had a defective pen. If you get near the end and are not sure you're getting insulin slowly press the plunger of the syringe and see if a drop of insulin appears on the end. That will tell you if you are getting insulin or air.
