Katie is in her 2nd remission. She normally has 1/4 tsp (1/8 2xday) of miralax daily to prevent constipation, has been taking it for years. She is on a raw diet, which produces harder, dryer stools, hence, the reason for the miralax.
She has been ill and not eating well and some vomiting for a week. Blood work and xrays are not giving us any answers. X ray shows constipation, vet says. To be clear, she was NOT constipated when she stopped eating, so that is not the cause, but more the result of not eating, and not getting her daily miralax consistently. I have been able to get more miralax in her the last few days though, as she has been eating a little better.
But vet is absolutely insisting on lactulose too, despite my worries about the sugar.
Most everything I have read has said not to give diabetic cats or use with caution.
I even read about a cat in remission being thrown out of remission and needing insulin again due to lactulose use. We have worked too hard for this 2nd remission to lose it now.
It's been a week since she defecated. She normally goes about every 2-3 days. The weekend is coming up and afraid of an emergency with no easy access to vet or ER.
What is the consensus on the lactulose, yay or nay? I really dont want to use it. What is your experience?
Edited to add: Miralax and Lactulose supposedly do the same thing, draw water to colon. Since they both do they same thing, that is why I am hesitant to try the lactulose. Why give her sugar and the risk it, if does the same thing and may or may not help or make any difference?
I am unsure how much to increase miralax, should I double the amount, or would that be too much?
Help, guys, I dont have anyone to ask, I need some advice. Katie is still not feeling well, been through the wringer and is super stressed. I need to at least get her to defecate.
Btw, pumpkin is a no go too. She will just throw it up. She has super sensitive tummy and anything other than her normal food she cannot tolerate.
Thanks in advance for any help.
