What would you feed a new kitten?

I was thinking about this and decided to ask everyone their opinion.
If you were going to get a kitten now, would you feed it Evo dry or would you just avoid dry food altogether now?

I would never let a morsel of dry food in my house :lol: :lol: even though Evo is "low carb" it's still dry food.

When Gracie was a kitten, she ate Natures Variety Instinct raw and wellness. Tobey ate NV Instinct canned and wellness. I let them both eat as much as their little kitten bodies wanted....but only canned food.

I got Gizmo around the time Gabby was diagnosed. They both eat the same food. (Gizmo hated Wellness kitten food but was very happy with Fancy Feast. If Gabby ate it, he figured it was good enough for him.)

Only canned or raw, though I would maybe occasionally feed a few pieces of dry just so the kitten knows that it is food. Kind of the opposite what many people do, that is, they feed only dry food for years and then have trouble getting the cat to eat canned food when something like FD happens. Besides, you never know when an emergency situation may occur and the only thing that you can easily feed that doesn't need refrigeration or huge amount of storage space is dry food. A complete freeze dried raw brand is another dry crunchy option you can feed instead of regular dry. It can be fed as is or rehydrated in water.

After Squishy and everything I learned here on FDMB and on Dr. Lisa's web site, I knew I would never feed a cat dry food again. When I got Leroy, he was already eating NV raw food. Emma came from a rescue so she was only used to eating dry and canned. I continued with the canned and then moved her to NV raw. Emma still gets a little canned food for bedtime snack. Leroy really does not care at all for canned food :shock: He likes the liquid in a can of pate food and he will eat a litte canned/pouched food that is chunks or slices in gravy. I give them some freeze dried raw (Stella and Chewy's brand) every now and then to add variety to their meal and to keep them recognizing it as food.

EVO's original canned food: Evo Cat & Kitten (Turkey & Chicken formula) might be a good choice. This is what we switched Stu to when we switched him from dry EVO. He always preferred it to any of the other canned foods.

I got Zeke when he was 6 months. And he had been fed the kibble by the previous owners.

I definitely wanted him to eat the canned but when I first started the transition to the wet food, Zeke developed some horrible diarrhea. So I gave him the EVO kibble and over a 2 month period transitioned him to the wet. Starting him with just a teaspoon of wet per meal. What really seemed to help Zeke form more solid BMs was adding a little Pet Dophilus to the wet food. I had tried pumpkin and Fortiflora but it didn't help. Within 3 days of starting the Pet Dophilus the poo became less and less runny. As he got older, his GI tract got use to the wet and I don't give him the Pet Dophilus any more.

No dry food at all! I am not going through all this diabetes stuff again!! The problem with giving an occasional piece, although it wouldnt do any harm is that you have to buy a big bag and then the temptation is there if you run out of canned.. or if someone else comes in to feed...

We all have heard so many reasons to NOT give dry but really, are there any good reasons at all to give dry except for convenience for the owner? The "cleans the teeth" excuse doesnt even hold true any more.
