? What will happen to Ziggy if he goes a few days without insulin?

Hi, everyone! It's been a while since I posted and I just have a quick question. But I should probably update and say that Ziggy is doing great! He's been on Lantus since January and he's been doing so much better than he was before in every way.

So for the past couple weeks I've been trying to order Lantus from Mark's Marine pharmacy. Diabetic Cats in Need was able to order some for me in January, but now I'm trying to order myself. Due to continuous miscommunication from Mark's Marine and my vet being uncooperative in filling out and faxing a prescription to them (the pharmacy said they had Ziggy's prescription on hand, so I thought everything was fine, but they told me several days later that they actually don't, and my vet has decided to drag his heels in filling it out), Ziggy's insulin will only ship out possibly tomorrow, Friday, or even next week, depending on whether my vet finally faxes the prescription.

In the meantime, he's almost completely out of insulin! I thought I'd ordered far enough in advance, but I didn't think that a simple order would be so needlessly complicated!

So I'm anticipating that Ziggy will probably go this weekend and part of next week with no insulin until the shipment arrives. Is there anything I can do to help him while he doesn't have any? I feel so bad about this and I'm so angry at both the pharmacy and my vet for being so unhelpful with a simple order.

Hi Natalie,
It really isn't a good idea to go without insulin at all. There is a risk of ketones developing. Do you have Ketostix that you can test the urine with? Do you have any of the vetsulin you started with left?
I am going to tag a couple of people in the US/Canada who may have suggestions......as I don't live there and am not sure what to suggest.

Maybe check the Supply Closet forum to see if you can find someone willing to get you an interim supply of insulin quickly, or put your location in a message in this forum and see if there is someone nearby with Lantus who can help. Seen this happen before where two FDMB members linked up and shared insulin for a few days.

I do have ketone strips for testing! Unfortunately, I don't have any more Vetsulin.

@Wendy&Neko I will check the Supply Closet, thanks!

I will call the vet first thing tomorrow morning and make sure they fax it, and then call the pharmacy right when they open. If they can ship it out tomorrow, Ziggy might be okay.

also check Craigslist, wish we were closer -- I'm near Seattle -- two sellers semi close to me have vials for sale -- obviously you need to verify that it's genuine, not expired, stored properly --

And, being my obnoxious self, I'd go to the vet, and not leave until I'd seen the fax go out, with my own eyes. Then I'd call the pharmacy every hour until they'd sent the Lantus out. I guess I'd call the pharmacy from the vet to be sure the fax arrived before I left the vet, too. Etc!!
