Sophia had her blood test and the vet said that her kidneys are not good.. Bun 78, sugar 198 /I have not given her any insulin since oct 2005 she is always higher at the vet.. my people meter is under 100/ She is on Methimazole for her hyper-t.

Now.. what do I feed her? I have been giving her FF but it seems her blood sugar is going up. I can't just giver her kidney food that may hurt her diabetes.. should I give her half and half...

My favorite vet who took care of Sophia has left and now I have to deal with an overworked old vet.

I would appreciate some help.. maybe somebody has the same problems... th

Sophia is 16 and has a very bad appetite.... she now weighs 6.7 lbs... the hyper-t really hurts her.. and ,,, maybe the med for it hurts her kidneys.

Witn had both diabetes and CRF. I fed her almost all of the flavors of Friskies Special Diet canned foods. The only flavor I did not feed her was the Chicken & Gravy because of the carbs. She was on this diet for several years and during that time both her BG levels and kidney values remained constant.

With kidney issues you want to look for low phosphorus foods (under 250) - as Lisa mentioned Friskies Special Diet fits that bill.

Are you giving tapazole? what is the dose level?

Thank you. I give her the Methimazole cream 0.1 each ear twice daily. we gav e her gel before which is about half price but this seems to be working better.

With the tapazole, it can affect the kidneys. I know giving her something to fix one problem can lead to other issues. But it sounds like you are on such a low dose that it probably won't be an issue, rather just something to be aware of and when she gets blood work done, be sure they include the kidney tests - I thinks it's the bun/creatun or something like that.

yes the bun is too high.... and that is the problem.. i will try the Friskie because I need to balance diet controlled diabetes and the kidneys. she looks so pitiful with her bad coat and so skinny.... my poor little baby.

If she is that bad off you may want to talk to vet about phosphorus binders. I am not there yet so I can't comment on it but your cat may benefit from it.

Hi there,
I have found a solution to my 2 cats requiring different foods, as my sugar kitty Bean will try to eat the food for the crf girl Gumpy. Friskies makes the special diet that are classics....There are not alot of flavors that I have found, but at least if Bean wanders to Gumpys food, the carbs issue is covered and Gumpy no longer has to eat hi phos. food.
BTW.... I received this information from the wonderful ppl from this site! They are great!
Mom to sugar bean, civvie slappy and heart/crf gumpy
