What to do About Vacation

Hi!

I have 4 kitties. 1 is diabetic.
We always board the diabetic with the veterinarian, so he is not an issue.

In the past, we have put dry food and water and had a friend come in daily to ensure that the food and water was still available and nothing was terribly wrong. Since switching over to wet, we have been wondering if we should just buy some dry food for the non diabetic kitties just for the vacation?

Any suggestions on good dry food for a non diabetic?

We feed them all wet food now, the problem is that we really do not have a friend or neighbour to come in twice a day for a week to feed which is why we are thinking dry with free feeding is the way to go.

If you're not worried about having problems getting them back off the dry, then I wouldn't see too much of a problem temporarily feeding them a bit of dry. What I would do is probably have the person who can come in once a day to check on their food to also give them wet food and maybe even make some wet food popsicles to leave out for them so at least they're not consuming only dry the entire time you're gone.
 
If you have to feed dry, have you considered Young Again? It's really the only dry with low carb and a lot of people have had success with it on this board.
 
For my civvie, I had one neighbor do 4 days and the other neighbor do 5 days. Can you work something like that out?
Or you can have one neighbor do mornings and the other do evenings.

Yes, but it would be very expensive for 3 cats for a week.

We don't really have that kind of relationship with our neighbours... one side just moved in and the other side we've only said hello to twice since we've been here.

Good idea. They love the wet, so getting the back on the wet food wouldn't be an issue at all. Can you leave the "popsicles" out all night?
 
what about litter boxes - will someone be taking care of them?

If you are having a friend visit daily, you can freeze wet food ahead of time and have your friend come over, feed the wet, then put out frozen food - you could even buy a timed feeder and have your friend fill it up each day with the frozen food and while visiting put out fresh.

To make frozen food -

take one can of food, add water (I usually add 1/2 to 1 can of water) and freeze in a plastic bags or ice cube trays. If you do ice cube trays, figure out how many cubes = one can of food and make sure to make extra the number of days you will be gone.

You can do this in addition to the dry food. You can also try Stella & Chewy's freeze dried raw food dinner - that can be served dry and is better than serving kibbles. http://www.petfood.com/item/stella-and- ... od/498360/
