I started Spanky last week on Prozinc. The 1st dose, 1U he went hypo, but I'm thinking I did something wrong bc we now have him at 1.2U and his numbers are still high, averaging 250, and never getting below 180. This morning his BG was 365, he vomited and was in the bath tub begging for water again, which I have not seen in about a week. I gave him 1.2U again. I'm at work and can not access his spreadsheet. My question is: How long do you leave a cat at a dose before increasing or decreasing the insulin?

We usually recommend 3-5 days at a dose before changing, unless something unusual happens to warrant a change sooner. Just wondering, if he went hypo on 1u, why did you increase?

It is possible for too much insulin to cause high numbers as well--it's hard to tell without numbers to look at.

Have you been checking for ketones?

I sound like a terrible parent. I initially gave Spanky 1U and he got down to 53. I talked to the vet on Friday and Monday and the vet said that she had seen that before on a cats 1st dose or when the insulin is not mixed properly. I got some smaller syringes too bc it could have been my error. On Friday, I gave Spanky 0.8U and his numbers were high all weekend, never getting below 200. On Monday, I gave Spanky 1.0U and monitored him all day, BG never got below 200. Monday night, Tues, and Tuesday night, I gave Spanky 1.2U, and his numbers never got below 180. This morning after he was at 365 and he threw up, I fed him and gave him 1.2U. I did not test him again, as I was heading to work. My husband is home with him, but he won't test his BG. He says he is acting normal. I will work on his spreadsheet when I get home. It will be late, but I will complete it and post. I have a after work meeting, but I will attempt to run home and test before my meeting. I was just concerned on how long I should wait to up his dose. I have the ketostix, but I have not tested him. I'm sorry this is all over the place, so stressed after seeing high numbers this morn.

What do you mean 'smaller syringes'?
For Prozinc, do you not use U40 syringes?
There are U100 syringes but they are for use with insulins like Lantus and Levemir.
