I'm looking for a kidney friendly but still relatively low carb food for my Nipper. We are in the UK, and the food options are very different to the US. She's currently eating Purina DM, with a bit of chicken, tuna, and "Applaws Tuna Fillet" as supplements. Any ideas?
Here is what I can get in terms of vet foods:
Hills
IAMS
Eukanuba
Royal Canin
Purina, including NF (I can't seem to find the carb content for this)
Commercial:
Applaws (the tuna is on Tanya's list as being low in phosphorus)
A bunch of British/European brands.
Note: I can not get Hi-Tor Neo here (well I can, but I'd need a second mortgage!)
Medical info:
Nipper is 15, was recently diagnosed with stage 2 CKD, and has been on insulin for nearly 2 years. She also has acromegaly and an irritated bladder. She had acute pancreatitis 18 months ago but it is managed with digestive enzymes (Panzym). She also has a phosphorous binder in her food, and takes Cystease for her bladder and Gabapentin for pain. She has a good appetite most of the time. If I switch her to other commercial foods she gets diarrhea so she's been eating the Purina DM for over 2 years.
Nipper takes Lantus. She normally gets around 10U but recently she has had a couple of hypos so I've dropped her down to 2U and am dosing conservatively. Her BG is around 9-10 mmol/L (180-200 mg/dL) on 2U. Thus I'm OK with a little higher carb food if it will help her kidneys. (I've not been updating her spreadsheet lately.)
Cheers,
Lor
