What meds to give to cat with an infected tooth?

My mom's civvies cat Lillie has a swollen mouth and possible tooth abcess. She is on her third round of antibiotics and now the vet wants to give her a shot of Convenia. Smoky had been given that for suspected UTI and it made him feel horrible. I have heard bad things about this drug.
Does anyone have any experience in giving their cat meds for dental issues?

Wish I could help, Lisa but have no experience with this. Is the tooth going to be extracted once the infection has been dealt with?

I believe my mom is giving the antibiotic in an attempt to avoid possible surgery as her cat is 14 and anesthesia could be risky

I understand. FYI - my mother's old guy had several extractions under anesthesia and came through it well.

No experience yet. Vet noticed Maury has a tooth he is resorbing , its like reverse teething. Said it can be painful but he isn't showing any signs (anti jinx!) And we should think about dental work in the next month or two. Quick look at the quote $600!!! Ahhh =(.

With my own tooth abcess experiences, I took AB and or drained it. Not sure I would try the second on a kitty though. Anesthesia worries me with Maury but vet said if he were to show distres she could stop and immediately wake him up.

Does your mom's cat have cardiac problems or any other health conditions that would make it risky? If he/she is a healthy senior it may be just fine. I know my vet does a blood panel first and checks for any heart murmurs etc. before a tooth extraction.

No, she is very healthy except for the tooth problem

It may not be as risky as she thinks. They do monitor them closely when they are in the senior age, especially if it is a special request. I had them use a heart monitor on one of my elderly girls once during the procedure.
