Happy Fathers Day to all!

Hi everyone, its been awhile since I have posted. Tommy is really doing well and just started his OTJ trial last night. His numbers have been really good and we are hoping that this sticks. Does anyone know the percentage of cats that actually go off the juice and never have to take insulin again?

Thanks for taking the time to read my post. cat_pet_icon

Hi guys .. congrats and good luck on your OTJ trial! I don't know the percentage off hand, but I do know that mocha was on lantus for 22 months and is now 15 months OTJ! I know there are others on here who have been OTJ much longer as well ..

Some of the longest-time members might have an idea of how many kitties they have seen go OTJ, but it seems to happen at least once a week. I've only been here a year. Bob has been diet-contolled without insulin for almost a year now, after only 10 weeks on PZI.

The "never have to take it again" part will be tough to give you any idea on, because even when they go OTJ, they are still diabetic and can relapse later in life. But we celebrate all who make it to remission, and all cross our fingers that they will stay that way. And what we all learn here will certainly help all those kitties stay OTJ. For instance, I will never again buy any sort of dry food, and will only feed low carb canned food to Bob and Mullet, and to any other cat I am blessed with in the years to come.

for us,
it would have been three years this july for patches being diet controlled
he did very well up until the beginning of this year before he lost his battle in march this year.
BUT he had a good life....which it were longer but as the previous post mentioned they are always diabetic and I too will NEVER let a dry morsel touch molly my civvie's mouth or any other kitten that comes in the family again.

good luck!!

I must just say, reading posts like these give a person a little bounce in their step and some faith. I know it doesnt happen for every kitty, but its nice to read about! :)

Thank you all for replying and for all your well wishes. Tommy continues to do well and I am crossing my fingers that his pancreas keeps the good job going. We are on day 3 of this trial and planning the most awesomest OTJ party ever!

Free flowing cocktails for everyone and don't forget your dancing shoes!

I have read in a couple of places that kitties on combination of Lantus insulin and canned food only have an 80% chance of going into remission. Jake was on Lantus insulin six months (for a total insulin time of nine months - PZI for the first three months that did not work for him) and was switched to an all canned diet at about the same time he changed insulin. He has been in remission for over two years now and remains on an all canned diet. Jake is now 20 years old.
