What is the best human meter?

Hello guys my calico cat hope was recently diagnosed with diabetes and first they put her on pro zinc but that didn't seem to work with her so now we are trying Humulin on her and we need a meter to read at home... From what I have heard on various websites getting an alphatrak is not worth the money and that most human meters are relatively accurate so, with that being said I would like to know what is a good human meter for my cat?

p.s. is science diet mature cat for dry food and for wet food the fancy feast cans ok for my cat?
 
You will get many different responses on the meters. Walmart has a reliable and cheap meter called ReliOn. A lot of people use that one. Then there is the Accu-Chek Aviva that many like. Myself, I only trust and use the One Touch Ultra......not the Ultra 2, or the One Touch Mini.......just the regular One Touch Ultra and have used those meters for years. I still buy my strips from http://www.hocks.com/diabetic-supplies/blood-glucose-meter-kits.html even though it has been sold and FDMB no longer gets a commission from them.

Once you get a meter and start hometesting, it would be the best to remove all dry food and just go with all canned. Fancy Feast is fine but not the ones with gravy,,,higher carb.

How long did you give the Prozinc a chance? How old is Hope? If you are using a Humulin it must be N. That is a fast acting, short duration insulin and majority of cats do not do well on it. Lantus (Glargine) is an insulin well known for getting a lot of cats into remission. Please get a meter ASAP and learn to test now that you are giving her Humulin N. When using N insulin you need to feed a good 1/2 hr. before shooting so food is in the tummy.

Forgot to add when you buy a meter do not forget to buy test strips, lancets, and some Ketone testing urine strips.....either KetoDiastix or KetoStix.

Hope is 11 years old now and she was up to 10 units 2 times a day on pro zinc for 5 months until she started becoming severely hypoglycemic so the vet reduced the dosage of prozinc and she started having rapid breathing and not feeling well and that was only on 2 units, So I knew something was wrong. so now we are trying the humulin 2 units twice a day on the U-100 syringes
 
I have had the best luck with OneTouch Ultra Mini. The AlphaTrak is a waste of money and the strips are difficult to obtain. I did use the A.T. at one time. I still have some strips left and everytime I test Jake's BG, I compare the two meters - there is never more than a 10 to 15 point difference.

An all wet/canned diet is best for trying to obtain regulation and possible remission. Many of use these Fancy Feast varieties to obtain those results.
