My cat Buddy Had been at his vet for a curve on 1/11 & 1/12 came home yesterday. He had been on 3 units and his Vet upped to 5 units. Last night when I took a reading I got 41 and then 35. I did not give him insulin last night. This morning his reading was 457 so I gave him 4 units. It is time for insulin, his reading is 239. When I talked to his vet today, she said to use my own judgment. Please help me somebody with what to do. Please Help!!!

Hi--

I don't know Prozinc at all so I can't suggest a dose, but I think you should also post your question on the Prozinc forum to try to get it in front of as many knowledgable eyes as possible.

More information that might be helpful: how long after his last shot were the 41 and 35 readings, and how many units was that, and did you get any more readings during the day today, between the 4U and the 239 reading.

I hope someone can help you soon-- thank goodness you were checking!!!!!

Are you able to monitor tonight? If so I would try 3 units. Do you have any data to show how he reacts to his meal? When he typically Nadirs?

You can stall the meal and test again in 20 minutes to see if he is BG is raising. Then decide a dose after that

Cats can have an increased bg level at the vet due to stress. 2 unit increase is HUGE.
If it were my cat I would stall and see where his numbers are going.

Those low BG of 41 and 35 are hypoglycemic. You need to be real careful on the doses - ie. lower them. And you need to test before each dose. Otherwise you could kill Buddy - not kidding.

Please start a spreadsheet - and put it in your signature: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/fdmb-spreadsheet-instructions.130337/

Please read about hypos - and be ready if they ever occur:
- go to top of Prozinc forum and click the "Hypo" topic at the top.

Thank you everyone. I knew the low readings were bad, I called the vet about it. Sometimes I don't know if they know what to do. He did not tell me to put karo syrup on his gums or anything. I was having a hard time testing because I could not get enough blood and not knowing what I was doing, then Buddy started putting up a fight. Buddy got away from me and was hiding under the furniture, I had to move all the furniture out to get him. I am so glad I did not give up. I have only 1 ear that I can get blood from and it looks red. Does anyone else use the same ear all the time or do you use both ears

I generally vary the ear day to day. That way one ear has a 24 hour "rest". After poking I hold the area tightly between thumb and forefinger to stop the bleeding and prevent bruising. I also find that free handing the poke gives much better control of depth, etc.

I use the same ear 95% of the time with Chuck because he had 2 hematoma surgeries on his right ear. He has cauliflower ear on his right ear from the stitches. It seems to be WAY less sensitive than his left. But if he's sleeping heavy I will poke his left ear. But if he's awake he won't let me poke it and has a fit if I do.
I use neosporin with pain relief on his ear every day. We started with the poker on level 4 but we can now poke on a level 2 which I can't even feel. I pinch his ear between my fingers with just a little pressure to try to prevent a bruise. Sometimes he lets me... other times he just runs for his dish looking for the snack.
