I have found a company that makes fresh food for pets and they have provided me with the following nutritional panel for their cat food. The guy at the shop said it would be ok for a diabetic cat.

Protein 17.4%
Fat 3.6%
Carbohydrate 6.1%
Moisture 71.5%
Fibre 0.5%
Ash 1.4%
Calcium 2300
Phosphorus 2200
Linoleic a 4190

It comes cryo-vac'ed and the packet says 'contains fresh meat, heart, liver and vets all natural complete mix'.

The link to the brand is here http://www.vetsallnatural.com.au/

What do you think? Is this food ok for Austin? It's costing me about $50/week (AUD) to feed him at the moment (not including his insuling etc) and it's too expensive for the family budget.

I gotta tell you, I think it'd be cheaper to make your own. There are some good recipes around. Have you seen http://www.catinfo.org? There is a link to a good recipe there. If you can't find a low carb tinned food that works for you, I'd consider it.

What basis are those number in? DM, As-fed- %Kcal? Looks like As-fed to me?? which is not the same as the %Kcal numbers found in Janet & Binky's list.

You can read Janet & Binky's faq that has a SS you can use to convert DM or As Fed to %Kcal if you want.

On the home cooked tip I found this site to be ultra helpful and had success using their tools and products:

If you are interested in feline nutrition, Chapter 21 of SACN 5th ed is a good read:

Also you should be aware of the AAFCO guidelines:
